According to the political ideology that I subscribe to (libertarian), I’m supposed to be in favor of ending government funding of NPR. And from a theoretical point of view, I agree with that position.
But for me, the real world always supersedes any theory. NPR, along with its government funding, is a long standing tradition in this country, just like the national parks, the national museums, and the Post Office. So even though it goes against libertarian theory, I support a continuation of all of those things.
I like to call myself a “bad” libertarian because I am always happy and willing to disagree with libertarian theory whenever there is real world evidence against it.
Anyway, a lot of people who subscribe to libertarian (and conservative) ideology want to end government funding of NPR.
But I have a much better idea.
We should continue with government funding of NPR, but we should also ask them to please explain why their editorial board consists of 87 registered Democrats and 0 registered Republicans, and why they suspended senior editor Uri Berliner after he mentioned that information in an essay that was published by The Free Press.
On April 9, 2024, the Free Press published this opinion column by NPR senior editor Uri Berliner:
Original: https://www.thefp.com/p/npr-editor-how-npr-lost-americas-trust
In that opinion column, Berliner wrote the following:
I looked at voter registration for our newsroom. In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans. None.
Seven days later, on April 16, 2024, NPR published the following:
Original: https://www.npr.org/2024/04/16/1244962042/npr-editor-uri-berliner-suspended-essay
NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
NPR has formally punished Uri Berliner, the senior editor who publicly argued a week ago that the network had “lost America’s trust” by approaching news stories with a rigidly progressive mindset.
Berliner’s five-day suspension without pay, which began last Friday, has not been previously reported.
Yet the public radio network is grappling in other ways with the fallout from Berliner’s essay for the online news site The Free Press. It angered many of his colleagues, led NPR leaders to announce monthly internal reviews of the network’s coverage, and gave fresh ammunition to conservative and partisan Republican critics of NPR, including former President Donald Trump.
Instead of defunding NPR, we should ask them to please explain why their editorial board consists of 87 registered Democrats and 0 registered Republicans, and why they suspended senior editor Uri Berliner after he mentioned that information in an essay that was published by The Free Press.

National Propaganda Repsentives?.
Nah defund them- no other news outlet gets funding practically- their programs are crap-
Screw that. End it. Theres zero Constitutional authority for it.
L
If they are a government corporation, this is public information anyway.
We could ask them, but shut them down anyway. On the grounds that it’s totally unconstitutional.
Yeah. I’ll go with option “A,” just defund them as the base has called for for decades. There may have been an arguable desirability of government-funded entertainment and information in the 60’s (though I don’t think so.) Now there absolutely zero justification for these public expenditures. Beside, the hard core leftists who run these outfits have no interest in fairness or accountability. Any agreement to do so would be dishonest, they’d work day and night to circumvent rules mandating change, and no genuine effort at reform would be undertaken
Absolutely NOT. We should defund. The 'we should ax them' is optional (actually, they have been asked that many times over the past)
They know what they do. They know why they do it. They could have corrected the problem years ago. They haven’t fixed the problem. End all funding. Let fellow Leftist’s bankroll their propaganda mission.
What a stupid question. Defund them and I know the answer already
87 Dems to zero.
They were just about to bring in diversity with equal numbers of socialists and registered Dems.
Just defund them. All that stuff has been dealt with already. Articles don’t change anything if you don’t actually change anything.
The same side of the same coin.
Here is the reason there are no Republicans. The left doesn’t consider conservatives human. If they could get away with it they would kill us all. They slaughtered around 100 million in the 20th century without batting an eye. One of them brings up this no Republicans fact and he get suspended with no pay. That is the inner core totalitarian that is at their heart.
These liberal clowns call themselves dems but are socialists who use UPM to attain their socialists goals.
Too late. They should have invited Paul Ryan, Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney to their editorial board. But they failed to do that.
It’s a game called, “Let’s Pretend”.
As ABC pretended to be a neutral debate forum, as NPR pretends to be impartial—as they pretend women can have dongs & gongs.
Pretending doesn’t sound as harsh as “insane liars.”
Right. When the pasted on handlebar moustaches fall off they’re exposed as Marxist-Leninist scumbags.
As more are saying, the Dems secretly are just like Mamdani but were reluctant to honestly say so.
I remember Bernie saying “There’s been talk about what party I’m in since I’m independent but the answer is simple. I’m a Democrat.”
During a re-election campaign when he needed it.
Great post. You are my brother.
Propaganda broadcasts are not the job of government in a free country.
NPR simply should not exist, period.
