In 2021, California’s population declined for the first time since earning statehood in 1850. In 2022, it declined again. And then again in 2023. For a state historically defined by limitless opportunity and an ever-growing population, three straight years of decline delivered a cold dose of reality: things weren't working.
The Golden State, of course, is not alone. Since Covid, the biggest blue states have dramatically lagged behind the biggest Republican states in population growth. Between 2020 and 2024, California, New York, and Illinois each lost more than 100,000 thousand residents. Florida and Texas, meanwhile, both gained around 2 million residents. The disparity is shocking.
It is tempting to chalk up the unprecedented decline to Covid. Now that the pandemic has faded, numbers will even out, some might argue. Nothing more than a blip. But the most recent figures confirm that the reasons behind the blue-state population decline run much deeper than Covid. Even though case counts are a thing of the past, populous red states continue to lap their blue counterparts. Between July 2023 and July 2024, Florida and Texas gained more than 1 million residents combined. Illinois, New York, and California barely broke 400,000 cumulatively.
Though certainly exacerbated by the virus, policy failures are ultimately at fault. Disastrous housing shortages, needlessly burdensome environmental regulations, the mind-boggling mess that is California’s high-speed rail project. The examples go on and on. Thankfully, left-of-center intellectuals are coming to terms with a much-needed course correction (though some have been there for a while). Marc Dunkelman’s Why Nothing Works and Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s Abundance both attempt to address the problem—and a broader “Abundance Agenda” seems to slowly be gaining purchase with some policymakers.
But most elected Democrats remain oblivious or even contemptuous of the reforms needed to right the ship.

Why? They will just vote democrat socialist wherever they end up.
Once the deportations of illegals is completed, when ever that may happen, the democrat base will be significantly reduced that that party shouldn’t ever be in power again.
“They don’t move to AZ, UT or NV?”
I live in CA. This is anecdotal and a small sample, but...
I know hard-core leftists who have moved to AZ.
But everyone I know who has moved to UT or NV are conservatives.
Most likely those moving to conservative States had a very bad experience with Liberal controlled States. You might say Life changing bad experience!
Most people do not want the upheaval pulling up stakes and moving to a state they are probably not that familiar with. Physically, California is a beautiful state, to get someone to leave you have to treat them like pure crap.
Based on the numbers California is treating people like crap, everyone has a breaking point, millions have reached their breaking point, leaving the beauty of California behind and moving far away despite all the upheaval.
If you are a true blue liberal why would you move to a red state that goes against everything you believe in, in most case you wouldn’t do that, the vast majority of those packing up and leaving are moderately conservative to full blown MAGA.
They’re not. In years past it used to be that California/NY/NJ Leftists moved to red states and turned them blue (see Oregon, Washington, Colorado and nearly Florida, Arizona and Nevada).
The opposite has been happening the last 5-10 years. The people fleeing blue states are mostly Leftugees who are throwing in the towel on their former states realizing they are beyond saving. They have moved to red states and made them more red or to purple states on the verge of tipping blue and turned them back to being firmly red. There are numerous examples from Florida to Texas to Arizona.
I know the feeling. Its the same with my brother and my sister who is a headshrinker. I had no idea how Leftist psychiatrists were until I looked closely. Yikes! She fits right in with that. I still love them both even though I abhor their politics.
What you say about Dade County and other places like Texas and Arizona and Nevada is true.....Leftugees have definitely helped swing the pendulum back to the right in all those cases. Another HUGE factor though is the massive inroads MAGA has made with Hispanics. The Democrats just assumed they would always vote Democrat. We noticed for years these people are church-going, hard-working, family-oriented...culturally they’re just like us, and should be in our camp. Increasingly, they’re coming over to our side. They don’t like Gay Race Communism either.
BINGO! You said it.
Red states are the ones that should be afraid. Californians have been brainwashed since they were old enough to walk and talk. It’s ingrained in them to think lefty-lucy. They can’t help it. It’s why Colorado and other places have turned blue.
Like the Mexicans, they do not want o assimilate into their new land.
It will be interesting to see what happens if Mamdani wins in NYC, Florida could see another invasion of NY’ers moving South, hopefully not all the relatively Conservative people have escaped NY, if Florida does get a new flood of NY’ers, they will all end up in South Florida.
Blue state exodus should scare Red states.
NYS has lost almost half its House seats over the last six decades.
Deep State hasn’t cared.
If NYS is so blue, why does Deep State have to steal our elections, hmmmm?
“...UT should have very red US House reps and US senators. They don’t because they have open primaries.
.
Where Dem☭¢rats can “game the system?”
Plus these are the hard workers, entrepreneurs, business owners. You know, the ones that pay taxes which support the liberal craziness.
Communism does not work anywhere it is tried.
No doubt South Florida will be the top destination for many. For those in the financial sector, I think you will see a huge flow from NYC to here in Charlotte. Several people I know who work in this sector in NYC are dying to get transferred down here. The banks make them take a 20% haircut in their salary but their standard of living here is still vastly higher than it is in NYC. Hopefully they won't be just a bunch of Leftists who have fouled their own nest and will now seek to go to red states to ruin them too.
In the early 70’s Oregon had bumper stickers that read,” Don’t Californicate Oregon”. I guess it didnt work for them.
They aren’t escaping. They are like ruinous locusts having destroyed California now swarm to other states with the same voting habits that drove them to find new feeding grounds.
True, but I’m looking at sates like TX and here in NH with the influx of MA*******.
