As a bookworm, I'm naturally the obsessive compulsive buyer that Barnes & Noble seeks to attract. But one of my recent trips to their Frederick, MD store showed me just how much the bookseller giant was willing to go to sneak anti-Trump agitprop into their customers’ information diet.
As I was checking out some books for purchase last month, the cashier hawked his company’s “Monthly Pick” to me called Cultish published in 2021 by author Amanda Montell, who apparently became known in part for her third-wave feminist drivel Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language (2019).
You can already tell where this is going. I’ve never heard of Cultish nor expressed previous interest in buying it until the cashier waved it in my face. But I’ll admit I was morbidly curious after the cashier’s sales pitch. After all: I make a living doing media analysis and I’m no stranger to the exhausting number of lowbrow Trump-Is-A-Threat-To-Democracy cheesy-page-turners that plague Barnes & Noble bookshelves.
Buried in the fourth chapter of the book — purported to be a deep-dive into the psychology and rhetoric that guides cult and cult-like movements — there was one of the stupidest comparisons I’ve ever witnessed in print. According to Montell, President Donald Trump is like Jim Jones — yeah, the frenetic maniac responsible for the “Drink-the-Kool-Aid” Jonestown Massacre of 1978, which killed over 900 people through murder-suicide in Guyana.

My wife and I went into a high end store in the countryside recently in Rhode Island (the kind where a woman’s simple cotton blouse might be $150) and they had a section of books to choose from.
Right away, from reading the “selection” of offered books, I could see the place was run by Lefties.
Then, when I looked at the offering of custom greeting cards, they were universally anti-male and were pumping up how comparatively awesome and uniquely capable women are!
Yeah. Not hard to take their measure. I make it a rule not to spend a dime in those places.
Actually the Dems are much more like Jim Jones. Trying to spark a race war in hopes they’ll come out on top after the violence.
Sorry, conflated Manson in there, but they’re like Jim Jones in terms of being willing to destroy their own people who question their leadership.
We vacation in Maine and I always make it a point to go into this leftie book store. The shelves facing the front door are always anti Trump, pro Obama etc. I turn them around. It’s fun for me because after 10 years of doing this the owner is aware that I’m likely the guy doing this. But I never get caught! My wife always keeps her distance from me in there.
I’m caught between (optimistically hoping somewhat) that Barnes and Noble is just hoping to cash in on the leftist stupid crowd and sell this stupid book to them and thinking in fear (many times) there is a true worldwide covert group looking to subvert the people of the United States into believing this drivel in order to enslave them.
So depressing, either one.
The California Democrat party fully supported Jim Jones.
I worked for B&N for a bit, nice people at the store level but they have to push the books sent to them from corporate. I made myself useful, but I tended to recommend books that didn’t fall into the modern/feminist/commie/left slant, instead showing customers the classics and older fiction.
Twenty years ago I was a big fan of B&N because several of the stores were in driving distance. But my latest trip over there was totally not worth the gas money. I was looking for some children's books in a well-known series, but no, they don't carry them. Seems the series' authors have lately published some Christian themes.
Our Barnes and Noble is like it was taken over by Toys “R” Us. We don’t have any books stores anymore. I have to order books from Amazon. I guess that why Barnes and Noble only sells kids books.
The same Jim Jones that Diana Feinstein, Nazi Pelousi and other such luminaries schmoozed with? That Jim Jones?
