The mother of 11-year-old Jayden Perkins, who was fatally stabbed while trying to protect her from a violent attack by her just-paroled ex-boyfriend, is calling out Illinois politicians for using her son’s name for political gain while fighting her civil lawsuit against the state behind closed doors.

Laterria Smith, who was also seriously injured in the March 2024 attack, released an open letter to Gov. JB Pritzker on Wednesday. In it, she accuses his administration of publicly invoking Jayden’s name to promote changes to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, even as state lawyers move to dismiss her negligence suit tied to her son’s death.

Mothers with boyfriends. And ex-boyfriends. I think I see the problem.

Sometimes the left hand just doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.

So name the bill after Pritzker.

Call it “Jabba’s Law.”

Assuming Jerry Nadler hasn’t already used that in Congress.

She can ask for that, but sometimes, a story is so big and effects so many people, the family sort of loses ‘ownership’ of that tragic tale. Especially when all the details are uploaded online, available to all.

It moves into what’s known as
Public Domain, like it or not. Her very clear demand might make a few refrain from using the name of her deceased son, but not all. This is different than a hospital releasing private medical information to the public. That would be a
(HIPPA Violation. Health Ins. Portability and Accountability Act). You better not do that.

What a sad and outrageous situation. How awful for her younger son to lose his older brother like that and to witness the murderous scene. The mother sent Pritzker a very well-written letter.

…And if they didn’t? Couldn’t they claim they were dehumanizing him by _not_ saying his name?

They dated but he was setting off alarm bells, so she ended it. He began to stalk, harass, and threaten her. She had him put in jail. When he got out, he started again. She had him put back in jail on a probation violation.

They let him back out.

Within 4 hours, he was breaking into her home to murder her, stabbing her and killing her son.

The system failed this woman.

Thanks for posting this! And thank to Ms. Smith for her powerful letter.

That Pritzker is a real pig. Kudos for calling him out!

RIP Jayden Perkins, a brave boy who gave up his life for his mom.

See tagline!

This mother can never be consoled by politicians or lawyers. In the end this is a morality tale for a culture that has embraced neo pagan, hedonistic decadence.

I can’t speak for IL law, but in CA the suit would be barred by sovereign immunity under the Tort Claims Act. I imagine it’s probably similar there. Sorry for this situation but if errros in judgment were actionable against police, fire, probation, parole, etc agencies, the lawsuits would be endless

I hate living in this state anymore. I have lived here all my life, I just wish I could afford to move out. The democrats have ruined it, and the republicans don’t seem to give a damn…..

Prayers to the family. Ms Smith should have been told that Illinois let out a deranged idiot, so she could have find a better place (like Florida or any place that enforces the law) to protect her family.

Another fatality due to gross mismanagement in Illinois.

Not really. When you read stories like this, almost all of them involve blacks. What is it in their culture that makes them think violence is the solution to every problem? That's not a racists question. It's a legitimate question based on facts.

For years, the criminal justice system in Illinois has been a revolving door. The politicians can create alibis for their laxity or argue about the inequities caused by the systemic mass incarceration of minorities all day long, but reality is that Illinois does not want to lock up criminals, including pretrial detainees and sentenced convicts, because it costs money. It is cheaper to let the criminals roam the streets. Virtually no one in Illinois convicted of a crime serves an entire term of incarceration.

This is one of Governor J. B. Pritzker’s manifold failings. It is alarming to consider that he is a possible presidential candidate on account of his wealth. He has been a lousy governor.
