China’s J-20A “Mighty Dragon” represents a significant leap in the country’s military aviation, a fifth-generation stealth fighter designed to challenge Western air dominance. On paper, it boasts an impressive suite of features, including a low radar cross-section, advanced avionics, and a versatile weapons payload. However, significant questions remain about its real-world combat effectiveness.

Given the one child policy, I wonder how many family lines will be forever gone in any large-scale military conflict. I can’t imagine that will foster a fight-to-the-end spirit in their armed forces.
Such a pathetically written piece I got tired of trying to fight meaning out of it.
And, as I recall, the 1979 war was a brief incursion into Vietnam — and they got their butts kicked.
For a culture that loves to throw around the term “paper tiger”, there is a good chance that their military IS a paper tiger.
Interesting though that the statement “However, significant questions remain about its real-world combat effectiveness” reminds one of the statement “Initial Dominance vs. Later Vulnerabilities: The Zero was incredibly dominant in the early years of the war (1940-1942) due to its superior maneuverability, range, and the high skill of Japanese pilots. However, its design prioritized these qualities by sacrificing pilot protection and self-sealing fuel tanks.” Before the war, the US vastly underestimated the combat effectiveness of the Japanese Zero and were hammered in dogfights. They eventually learned how to fight them. I worry that we are underestimating the Chinese 5th Generation Fighters.
Agree. Russia took years to get their feet under them and they are probably one of the most effective war fighters NOW….a few hundred thousand(million?) deaths later. Not to mention Israel took out Russia air defences in Iran in a few weekends.
“China has not fought a war since 1979. Full stop.”
Thoughout their history....through 3,000+ years...unless they are fighting each other, or a tiny neighboring country.....their win ratio is close to zero.
I read it, and still don’t know the one mission it was built for.
Plus to say this “although the Raptor is no match at all when going up against an adversary in combat” is just stupid.
IMHO an army of “one child” soldiers, unproven equipment and the Russian debacle in Ukraine all dissuaded Xi from attacking Taiwan. Xi realized that a full scale, resisted attack across 90 miles of open ocean was not only likely to fail but the casualties would be huge. The loss of those soldiers would create a political crisis within China. It would have gone very bad for Xi, his family, and syncophants. The military would have been humiliated and would have blamed “corruption” for the catastophre. In fact Xi probably feared a military coup and the overthrow of the communist party.
“I read it, and still don’t know the one mission it was built for.”
It’s in there — it says “to beat America.”
Is the J-20A the one that has to fly attached to refueling 100% of the time ? LOl
Is it stealthy from above?
A lot depends on the quality of its missiles.
Well duh.
PACOM is well aware of the aircraft but more concerned with its missile payload.
I thought so too. Gave up. These people must get paid by the word and like youse tube by the minute of repetitive content.
Indeed, a gigantic nothing-burger with zero information. It reads like something Kamala Harris might have written if she could write.
I tried to find what the ‘one mission’ was but was unsuccessful.

“Not getting shot down is Job One!”
“Such a pathetically written piece I got tired of trying to fight meaning out of it.”
That’s because it didn’t say anything.
Couple that with the low numbers of F-22s available. Something like 25 may have to take on the whole PRC air force on short notice. Those odds don't favor quality over quantity.
