CONSUMER PRICE INDEX - APRIL 2025

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.2 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in April, after falling 0.1 percent in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.3 percent before seasonal adjustment.

The index for shelter rose 0.3 percent in April, accounting for more than half of the all items monthly increase. The energy index also increased over the month, rising 0.7 percent as increases in the natural gas index and the electricity index more than offset a decline in the gasoline index. The index for food, in contrast, fell 0.1 percent in April as the food at home index decreased 0.4 percent and the food away from home index rose 0.4 percent over the month.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent in April, following a 0.1-percent increase in March. Indexes that increased over the month include household furnishings and operations, medical care, motor vehicle insurance, education, and personal care. The indexes for airline fares, used cars and trucks, communication, and apparel were among the major indexes that decreased in April.

The all items index rose 2.3 percent for the 12 months ending April, after rising 2.4 percent over the 12 months ending March. The April change was the smallest 12-month increase in the all items index since February 2021. The all items less food and energy index rose 2.8 percent over the last 12 months. The energy index decreased 3.7 percent for the 12 months ending April. The food index increased 2.8 percent over the last year.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Changes to leased cars and trucks source data and methodology

Effective with this release, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has replaced the survey data collected for the CPI's leased cars and trucks index with transaction data purchased from a vendor to increase the accuracy of the index.

The Measuring Price Change in the CPI: Leased cars and trucks factsheet at www.bls.gov/cpi/factsheets/leased-cars-and-trucks.htm has been updated to reflect these changes.

It was interesting reading the AP pre posting of the news. I howled when the AP pointed out Trump said the price of gas has gotten below $2. They went on a paragraph rant about how gas averages above 3 in the states. Of course Trump was pointing out the WHOLESALE price. I really wish that someone would blow AP off the map.

Libertarians do have some good ideas. But they have no patience, and rarely think ahead.

Score another one for Trump here.

I’m rooting for 0% inflation in the 3rd qtr. so there is no increase in Social Security payments, only increases in the healthcare insurance premiums.

I was just thinking about this on the way to work, now that Rand seems to be falling into a self-dug political hole.

Libertarianism hasn’t been implemented in any society in history. I was thinking the reason is it requires everyone to act honestly and in good faith.

In reality if we had pure libertarianism anyone who acts honestly and in good faith would just be a sucker and would be taken advantage of.

MSM reports that this is due to the effects of “Biden’s Economy,” certainly not Trumps.

They never tell the truth on anything concerning Trump.

Reminds me of how Obama was still blaming the “Bush Economy” for his own failures - eight years into Obama’s presidency.

True Libertarians want maximum freedom, and no restraints at all on personal liberty. That sounds good, but would be disastrous in practice.

For one thing, all drugs would be legal. Wanna buy some heroin? Just walk down to your neighborhood heroin store.

Then you’d have junkies everywhere OD’ing and laying on sidewalks. And that includes kids who were tempted in a moment of weakness. That’s not the kind of society I’d want to live in.

Historical and current experience suggests that close to 30% of a national population will fall to heroin addiction if this drug is legal and freely available.

That is a catastrophe that no nation can tolerate. Even in producing countries, such as Afghanistan or Burma, heroin use is restricted by local authorities and by social customs.

But I thought inflation was going to roar because of the tariffs.

Wait until the GDP prints at about 3% next quarter. (The accounting of imports prior to April 1st was a negative for GDP. That will swing 180 degrees in a single quarter as those goods “enter the system.”)
