Another multimillion-dollar F/A-18 Super Hornet has been lost from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, marking the second such catastrophic incident in barely a week.
According to multiple sources speaking to CNN, the latest jet went down in the Red Sea following what appears to be an arresting gear malfunction during landing.
The pilot and weapons systems officer were forced to eject and were later rescued, suffering only minor injuries. But the jet, valued at over $60 million, now rests on the ocean floor — unrecovered and unrecoverable.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Just last week, another F/A-18 fighter jet fell overboard from the Truman after a “hard turn” to allegedly dodge Iranian-backed Houthi missile fire. That’s two high-tech war machines gone in a matter of days.

You’re making assumptions not based on facts.
Some of this is due to the high operational tempo of the Truman. People get tired, things break, entropy rears its ugly head.

Why is the trashed F-18 unrecoverable? The water isn’t that deep.
Let’s see how long before the commanding officer is relieved of command.
I'm sure the Houthis will just idly sit by while we execute a recovery operation that requires days of sitting in the same spot in the Red Sea.
Truman is overdue to return to port for maintenance. The Vinson is its relief.
We don't need no stinking facts. 🤡
Dodged enemy fire last week and a another plane was lost while in active combat zone conditions.
I’d say let an investigation happen in the normal course. But the silver lining is that no one is dead or seriously injured here.
or the Carrier Air Group Commander (CAG) or both
I suppose this incident could be included in the argument that drones are the future. Like with tanks, expensive warplanes belong in the past.
I was wondering the same thing
This is FreeRepublic. Just scream “DEI” whenever something goes wrong.
“Just In: Second F/A-18 Super Hornet Lost in Red Sea from USS Harry S. Truman”
Not a big deal, just restart the production line. Of course we’ll have to buy the titanium from Putin and electronic piece parts from Xi, but no doubt they’ll sell that stuff to us.
LOL!
It has an average depth of 490 m (1,610 ft), and maximum depth of around 3,040 m (9,970 ft).
Would you buy a new Corvette after its been parked in 100 feet of sea water overnight ? Salt water and electronics do not mix.
They need to recover it, bring it back to the United States and destroy it so that nothing proprietary can be found by anybody who tries to recover the jet. Pretty stupid if we don’t do that.
No, but you have to make sure you cover the wreckage so that anything proprietary could not be copied
Someone will eventually get it although not necessarily right away.
