We made Vietnam into a pretty good country. I hear good things from people who have visited.

India has also reduced tariffs to avoid reciprocal tariffs.

Trump’s strategy is working

Everyone I know who has visited there (as modern tourists) really enjoyed it.

Same here. Apparently a friendly place and cheaper than most.

Vietnam makes some cars but mostly assembles a lot of brands.
They are big in exporting car parts.
They eliminated the tariffs on the imported components that go into car parts.

Vietnam has a high tariff on auto imports - approx 45-62% - but doesn’t export that many cars - approx 5 billion dollars worth total...some do go to the US - about 80.7 million dollars worth in 2023.

The US doesn’t export much to Vietnam ... approx. 13 billion dollars total - mostly electronics.
Cars are about 12.5 million dollars worth in 2024 exports to Vietnam

Vietnam says:
Among the cuts, the tariff on American LNG will be cut to 2% from 5%, on automobiles to 32% from a range of 45% to 64%, and on ethanol to 5% from 10%, Nguyen Quoc Hung said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website late on Tuesday.

Luckily Ho Chi Minh kicked the bucket long before the war ended.

At least the people who ran Vietnam after the war quickly came to realize that Communism doesn’t really work, but of course they still wanted to stay in power, so they just keep the name of the Communist Party for stability.

Nowadays Vietnam is no more autocratic than Singapore.

"What a waste that war was."

You got that right. My brother enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Vietnam from 1966-67. I'm now a 77 year old woman who graduated from high school in 1965. I didn't know crap about the war. I supported my brother completely, and bought into the lie that we were fighting the spread of communism over there.

What I eventually realized, was that we we're fighting a proxy war against Russia and China, and while our father, sons, and brothers were fighting and dying over there, plenty of politicians here on both sides of the aisle were getting rich through their investments in the military industrial complex. I also realized that while we were involved over there, we took our eye off the ball here at home, and it allowed domestic communism to blossom and grow here, which helped the RAT party turn into a communist organization set on destroying this country, and it's only gotten worse as the years have passed.

This is why I am so against U.S. involvement in Ukraine. It's nothing more than another proxy war with Russia, and a new set of politicians are getting rich off the back of the taxpayer.
