It’s not all about running gun battle firearms for daily duties afield and on the farm.
Here are my top 5 picks for takedown varmint problem solvers.
Henry AR-7
What can I say about the incredibly handy little AR-7 made by Henry? Well I have reviewed them in the past and absolutely love them. They break down and fit inside of the stock. They are tough and run from two supplied 8 round magazines in self loading fashion. If a critter can get through that quick stream of .22 long rifle projectiles, Well you need a shotgun!
Savage Model 42
Here is a newer version of the classic and now discontinued Savage Model 24. Choose between two barrels when on target. You can have the .410 bore shotgun or the .22 long rifle. It even comes with a bug-out bag!
Ruger Takedown 10/22
I have always been a fan of the Ruger 10/22 rifle. With the ability to use various capacity detachable magazines, including a 50 rounder, they are extremely light recoiling, fast shooting and accurate. With .22 long rifle ammo still the cheapest option for plinking, the Ruger 10/22 is a no brainer! Add the option of easy takedown models, and now you have a vermin’s nightmare ready to be unleashed but easily stored.

If it’s a gun to be carried in a truck, I’m going to have something with more “punch.” The guns shown are, to me, more in line with “backpack/trail” guns. Lightweight.
The Hi-Point carbine has entered the chat.
They missed the best one IMO. The Springfield Scout /410/22.
The stainless M6 breaks down nicely, and is very popular with bush pilots all over the world.
Bolt action .22-250 is primo varmint terminator. On the lower end of the velocity scale a Marlin 882 SS .22 magnum. Mine has a 3x9 and can drive tacks at 100 yards.
Build the truck around a 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun.
Agreed. My Savage Model 12 22-250 let me pick which eye of a squirrel at 200 yards. Point blank is 264 yards. That means the bullet rises to the level of the scope and back down. It’s so flat shooting you can shoot 250 yards inside of a 1 1/2 inch pipe.

I like That Idea.
A ‘Truck Gun’ by any other name
Would smell As Sweet!
I carry a Keltec Sub 2000 in the door pocket in my pickup. It is only 9mm but it is better than nothing.
Hi-points are inexpensive which is a plus should there be a break in.

Mouth waters for some Prairie Dog Jerky….
Don’t Prarie dogs carry some kind of nasty plague?
Air rifles are getting pretty dang good these days, reaching out very accurately to a few hundred yards, and packing quite a whollop for air guns. The .30 cal air guns especially. For regular deer hunting, and large game, there are air gun calibers up to calibers thst can take down African Buffalo. The .72 cal air gun with ammo the size of grapefruits practically, cinder blocks disintegrate upon impact.
Remember a few years back when the animal rights groups were screaming about how the Prairie Dogs were going extinct and needed government protection?
The old ranch we used to live in back in 1949-1952 is today covered with them.
My stepdad had one of those when I was a teenager. I used it to make spending money, quite a bit too.
Soybean farmers in my area of Southern Indiana had issues with Groundhogs eating the tops out of the plants stunting the growth and severely impacting their yield per acre. They paid a bounty on them.
In the spring I’d go out before school and early mornings on the weekends and end the problem for them. Soon I was getting calls from other farmers wanting me to help them out too.
I did this for several years before I left for college. I have no idea what happened to that Savage, I’d sure like to have it now.
If I lived back there today and one of my grandkids wanted to do that, I believe I would suppress the rifle, who knows how many you could get daily before they get spooked and retreat into their burrows.
You’re back again??
Here’s one for you:
“Five Click Baits Perfect for Your Silly Blog.”
Yup. I watched a bunch of air rifle videos of Prarie dog hunting, and it was obvious that there were areas that were f8lled with them. Supposedly the reason plague is so prevalent is that there are so many ground dwellers in concentrated areas which help spread it quickly.
Those are amazing, but the support infrastructure is tremendous.
? You mean like needing an air pump and bottles for extended shots and such?
Customized the 10/22 takedown with trigger, bull barrel, Leopold .22 optics and hitting nickels at 100yrs. The nice thing about the bull barrel upgrade is that the scope rails are on the barrel, not the stock, so the zero doesn’t change upon reassembly. It doesn’t fit in the oem carry case any more, but a pelican case works great.
Pro tip; as 22lr is a dirty round, disassemble and thoroughly clean the factory mags regularly for reliable function. It takes only five minutes
