Less likely in states with homestead protections, but can kill newbies to any area.

My county has property taxes "generally" for schools and the school district has "supplemental levies" annually for even more money. Tax assessment appraisals continue upward in part because developers keep building more expensive apartments and in part because of the school district's insatiable desire for more money. It's irritating as a "senior citizen" with no children at home and no grandchildren in Idaho. I'm being fleeced to keep the teacher's union well financed while producing bottom level results with the students.

Gee, isn’t inflating the assessed value of a property a CRIME in New York? Quick, somebody tell Letitia James about this!

Now you know why senior areas like Sun City are popular, no kids, no schools. My wife & her friends would stay in Sun City each winter & she laughed at Walgreens closing at 8 and being able to get in a restaurant at 6.

Folks involved in hiking property taxes to increase revenue for public schools should be hanged.

I have never understood how I can pay an excise tax on cars every single year in perpetuity.

It seems unconstitutional. And I live in a New England state reputed to be the worst in the nation for taxes.

The official answer is to pay for road repairs and such, but that money goes into a general fund that is used for BS.

HOAs and their “concern” for home values are doing nothing but helping real estate agents’ commissions and raising property taxes for everyone else with every overpriced sale they make.

Part of the reason this is done is the Curley Effect.

Politicians purposely do this to make life increasingly difficult for people who work or otherwise have money. Raise their taxes, give them poor schools, make sure crime is high, allow the streets and bridges to fall into disrepair, etc.

Give money that should have gone to these things to your buddies who have organizations that cater to those who won’t work.

In this way they have a captive underclass who will vote for them.

Eventually enough working people move out, the people who would vote against aforementioned politicians.

At that point you’re guaranteed reelection.

Texas does 6% sales tax once when you buy, then you register each year for about $70.

Property taxes mean you don’t own your property but instead rent it from the government.

Has there ever been a power (constitutional or otherwise) that government hasn’t abused? I can’t think of one.

Property tax is criminal. It’s hard to beleive they ever got the people to go along with that epic con-job.

Why in hell do we have to pay rent to the government to live in our own homes?

It’s criminal fraud!

I recall passing through Sun City as a passenger in my parent's car. Dad was always wary of the speed traps. That was how Sun City kept the coffers topped up. I've passed through many times as an adult...still wary of the speed traps. I'll turn 69 in August. Last year's cancer experiences shortened my retirement horizon. I haven't retired yet and it will be a short retirement if statistical prognosis is correct. Of late, our trips out to eat have been punctuated with screaming toddlers. Frankly, food is too expensive now to have the dining experience consistently spoiled in that fashion. We'll be eating at home more.

Sigh. Much the same. I have heard that next to property taxes, it is the excise taxes that account for much of the tax revenue.

It galls me.

A couple years ago we did major remodel on our house...Assessor lackey came out and literally measured every stone garden bed and stone wall...but, since taxes did not go up THAT much my hub accepts it. He hates to rock the boat...

The “Zillow” effect. All the values they show are fantasyland if you are actually trying to sell your house, but the tax appraisers love them.
