Agreement between the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and German company Diehl Defence paves the way for large industrial projects Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the German company Diehl Defence, which produces IRIS-T systems and is "an important part of Ukraine's air defense shield."

According to the minister, the signed agreement paves the way for large industrial projects that will strengthen the capabilities of Ukrainian air defense.

In addition, the memorandum provides for a threefold increase in the supply of missiles and air defense systems, Umerov noted.

IRIS-T is a medium-range anti-aircraft missile system developed by Diehl Defence in 2014 and designed to destroy cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as aircraft, helicopters and drones.

As Defense Express reported, Berlin Considered Accelerating the IRIS-T Systems Deliveries and Joint Air Defense Production. We also wrote, that Bundeswehr Disclosed the Number of Patriot, IRIS-T Air Defense Missiles Supplied to Ukraine.

As I have been noting, IRIS-T is the heir (in Europe/Ukraine) to Patriot. This has become urgent as the US has ceased supplying Patriot to Ukraine, and more generally it seems that Raytheon has not managed to significantly increase production sufficient to meet the current vast demand for Patriot globally. The announced increase in production rate for IRIS-T is very welcome. It also takes a portion of vital Ukrainian needs out from under US political pressure, or it will. TBD when this makes a difference.

Also very interesting re production rates, German deliveries, etc. https://en.defence-ua.com/industries/bundeswehr_disclosed_the_number_of_patriot_iris_t_air_defense_missiles_supplied_to_ukraine-13657.html

The Germans understand what the Ukrainians have long understood, the art of the deal requires that you begin negotiating not by conceding everything but by increasing your own leverage.

The Germans also understand that the money for air defense is going to Germany rather than to the US.

A rather artful deal for Germany and for Ukraine - for the US, not so much.

prolonging the inevitable, while extending the suffering?

Several things -
1. This is a defensive weapon. This is meant to intercept cruise missiles, and thus reduce the Russian potential to inflict harm.
2. If significant increases come reasonably soon, this could render Russian military pressure largely moot. These things are also good at shooting SU-24’s btw.
3. Iris-T is already being supplied to Ukraine. TBD is if delivery rate increases can be arranged direct from German stocks (note other article), given guaranteed backfill. That would reduce lead time.

4. Note that about post-ceasefire. This is a bit of insurance for post-ceasefire, for whomever ends the ceasefire.

Past administrations have laid an egg that Trump now has to deal with - including dealing with Zelensky who has been brave - but who is now putting his people and nation at risk by not being willing to negotiate peace with some reasonable concessions.

Trump's mineral deal is IMHO a brilliant way to bind Putin's hands by putting direct US interests in his way. It was a much better security guarantee than any of the other means that have been tried and aren't working. The reason Trump has pulled ongoing financial support of Ukraine is because he's a pragmatist who sees that ongoing conflict is only going to get more people killed, AND he needed to push a reality check for Zelensky who wants to fight on with other people's money and lives. Europe, by undercutting Trump, has only prolonged the suffering. Great deal? Not so much.

The question is: why didn’t they do this 1-2 years ago? The answer is obvious: Trump forced their hands

True, yes he did.
But in such a way that now everyone is, I hate to say it, obliged to arm themselves against a now inimical US.

Too bad that the mineral concessions demanded don’t actually exist. Trump pulled something out of his ass just to have a negotiating point. Which does not serve as a security guarantee. Which raises the question of Trumps sincerity. EVERYONE is convinced that he wants to declare a deal, and hand everyone to Putin.

In that case, the UK is really screwed.

Maybe. The point there is everyone was trying to placate Trump in a rampage.

Give the Euros 6 months and the sillier stuff will probably be forgotten. But heck, I don’t know, these days the world turns over every week.

US dollars paying the bill? Even if not direct US military aid $$’s, we are still paying salaries, pensions, health care bills, etc. for Ukraine under “humanitarian aid” which frees up money to pay for German military hardware..

My stress is OK.
I knew something like this was likely.
Trump was saying some squirrelly crap for weeks.
Now everyone needs to adjust. But that adjustment is going to have to be of “the world turned upside down” sort, and God have mercy on us all. On you too.
