Romanian far-right candidate for presidency taken for questioning
BBC ^ | 02/26/25 | Paul Kirby & Mircea Barbu

Romania's conservative populist presidential election front-runner Călin Georgescu has been arrested in a shock move by the state, which has left his supporters bewildered and outrage, as they mobilize to protest what appears to be brazen ongoing political persecution.

In addition, Romanian news outlets are reporting that police are searching the homes and offices Georgescu's close associates, reportedly in connection with the funding of his election campaign last year.

I've wondered why Authorities in Romania are cracking down on this guy and voiding the results of an election.

I think it has to do with Romania being in the process of building the largest NATO base in Europe right on the Black Sea and this guy being against the war in Ukraine. Either way, nothing says Democracy more than voiding the outcome of an election and blaming it on Russian Interference.

For the mainstream media, every conservative is “far-right”.

I wonder if the BBC ever called Barack Obama “far-left”.
🤔

The Romanians learned what to do with a tyrannical government. Keep pushing.

“to fight fascism we must behave like fascists - but that’s ok because we’re not the fascists we’re protecting everyone from”

...seems to be the prevailing ‘wisdom’ in Europe.

Standard US/NATO/EU playbook:

1) Overthrow current government and install puppet regime by CIA funded NGO front groups.

2) Build NATO military base.

3) Install missiles on military base.

I believe the same thing is happening in Sweden and Finland.

Trump should demand this harassment cease immediately or no more money.

The Euro elite and MSM would have you believe that Georgescu's popularity is purely a function of Russian money and influence.

This is of course false: I'm sure there are many in Romania opposed to EU policies and worried about the war in Ukraine.

However, it's also quite possible that those who have some political support are also on the take from Russia. The two positions are not mutually exclusive.

Update from an article I’m following about the situation

Update(11:25ET): Prosecutors have revealed that police have raided nearly 50 addresses of people and associations connected with Romanian presidential front-runner Calin Georgescu, who has denied all wrongdoing and said state authorities are trying to block his candidacy.

Georgescu will reportedly be released from a hours-long detention by police for questioning. But emerging reports say he’s been charged with ‘attempted coup’ and advancing ‘false information’. Reuters has summarized the charges against him include forming an antisemitic organization, promoting war criminals and fascist organizations, and communicating false information.

100%, he won the first round of the elections in Romania, before the final and 2nd round of elections, the Supreme Court in Romania nullified the results based on Russian Interference.
