Good point.

I think the way that would work - and she briefly explains it at the end - is that leaking classified information is only treason if it puts our national security at risk.

The example you gave - leaking classified information that some senators are getting blackmailed for diddling kids - does not put national security at risk, and is therefore not treason, and not punishable by death. In fact, revealing something like that actually protects national security (and children) by exposing the blackmail and the child diddling.

Instead of leaking that would be whistleblowing.

Actually, rather than the death penalty, I like the idea of first sending them to GITMO for interrogation to find out higher ups who were also traitors, then sending them for the rest of their life to the El Salvador hell prison.
