Amid what US President Donald J. Trump called ‘very serious’ – if still-secret – peace discussions with Russia, some aspects of the sought agreement have started to leak to the press.
One of the most relevant so far is that the US wants Ukraine to hold elections by the end of the year, especially if Kiev signs a ceasefire with Russia in the coming months, according to President Trump’s Ukraine envoy.
Reuters reported:
“Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, said in an interview that Ukrainian presidential and parliamentary elections, suspended during the war with Russia, ‘need to be done’.
‘Most democratic nations have elections in their time of war. I think it is important they do so’, Kellogg said. ‘I think it is good for democracy. That’s the beauty of a solid democracy, you have more than one person potentially running’.”
Trump and Kellogg are working on a plan to achieve a deal in the first months of the new administration, to reach an end to the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two.
So far, they have offered few details about their strategy for ending it.
“The Trump plan is still evolving, and no policy decisions have been made, but Kellogg and other White House officials have discussed in recent days pushing Ukraine to agree to elections as part of an initial truce with Russia, two people with knowledge of those conversations and a former U.S. official briefed about the election proposal said.”
If elections took place in Ukraine, the winner would be responsible for negotiating a longer-term pact with Moscow, the sources said.
How would this be greeted in Kiev? It’s unclear. Zelenskiy has said elections could be held this year if the fighting ends and strong security guarantees are in place for Ukraine.
“A senior adviser to Kyiv and a Ukrainian government source said the Trump administration has not yet formally requested Ukraine hold presidential elections by the end of the year.
Zelenskiy’s five-year term was supposed to end in 2024, but presidential and parliamentary polls cannot be held under martial law, which Ukraine imposed in February 2022. […] It could also ignite political instability, the source said, because it would make Zelenskiy a lame duck, diluting his power and influence and fueling jockeying by potential challengers.”
Officially, Russian diplomats say that direct contacts between Moscow and the Trump administration were not yet underway.
The Russian Foreign Ministry says it is still waiting for the US to approve its new ambassador in Washington, a post currently unoccupied.
Putin does not think Zelensky is a legitimate leader in the absence of a renewed electoral mandate and has stated that he does not have the legal right to sign binding documents related to a potential peace deal.
check… your move, z
Not happening. Russia will not agree to any cease fire before elections and likely won’t after, unless a number of important conditions are met - beginning with no more re-arming of Ukraine.
Open and fair, and pulling all soldiers back to do so, just like Putin has done during his 26 year reign.
It’s really none of our business. Just pull the plug on all of it. The Euros want grain from the Ukraine. Let the Euros themselves fight for their empire.
And let Europe fund the rebuilding of Ukraine.
Demanding that a country conduct national elections while at war and under partial military occupation is morally dubious. Ukraine didn’t choose to be invaded. No demand that Russia conduct elections under UN supervision.

State Department, Jan. 20, 2025: “To date, we have provided $65.9 billion in military assistance since Russia launched its premeditated, unprovoked, and brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and approximately $69.2 billion in military assistance since Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014. We have now used the emergency Presidential Drawdown Authority on 55 occasions since August 2021 to provide Ukraine military assistance totaling approximately $27.688 billion from DoD stockpiles.”
After all the BILLIONS upon BILLIONS of US Taxpayer dollars that were sent to Ukraine, I think their elections are our business.
If this is a necessary condition for after a ceasefire, then who can sign the ceasefire?
Obvious. St Z suddenly decides to allow elections knowing he will lose, he loses, then runs off to one of his US taxpayer funded mansions….
The only problem for him? The Ukrainian people know what he has done to them, they ( most likely a member of the military ) will hunt him down, a Mussolini style ending.
He will be running alright.
From his NAZI Solders who will want to string him up.
No, he knows he will lose. He will be skedaddling out of town soon. There’s going to be real hell to pay from the Banderites once any Uke begins peace negotiations. Who will secure the new government from Banderite violence and intimidation? For once in 30 years, there will be CIA or MI6 available.
See #13
The Z will NEVER have another election!! He will NOT do a PEACE deal because he wants to stay in power forever!! The MONEY IS FABULOUS!
In reality, Ukraine is none of our business. It is a long way off and it poses no security risk to the US. It is none of our business and the sooner we stop meddling all over the world in every pissant country the better.
It was none of our business when Biden handed Ukraine $200 billion to do the dirty work Biden wanted done. It was a $200 billion puppet contract. Ukraine agreed to be a US puppet for $200 billion, with probably $130 billion of that raked off for corrupt US and Ukrainian politicians and oligarchs. The fact that Biden did stupid stuff does not make it “an investment”. It makes a dumbass policy.
OMG, a ceasefire and an election? What will the Zeepers & Neocons do? Cyanide capsules? Cocaine OD? Or an old fashioned bullet?
It’s happened before. At the end of WWII many Japanese just simply couldn’t take losing and offed themselves. I think a few Germans did the same.
>>>>>It was none of our business when Biden handed Ukraine $200 billion to do the dirty work Biden wanted done.<<<<<
Yes, it was our (the US Taxpayer’s) business what that money was being spent on, but the Biden Regime lied to us.
>>>>>The fact that Biden did stupid stuff does not make it “an investment”. It makes a dumbass policy.<<<<
I don’t think it was a “dumbass policy”...it was a corrupt policy. Biden knew from the beginning exactly what he was doing and didn’t care about the ramifications.
There’s a new sheriff in town, and he wants elections in Ukraine and he wants FREE and FAIR elections. After all the billions we’ve spent on that craphole, I think that’s the least we taxpayer’s should get.
