President Biden on Monday commuted the life sentence of activist Leonard Peltier, who was controversially convicted of murdering two FBI agents, within the final hour of his presidency.

"The President is commuting the life sentence imposed on Leonard Peltier, so that he serves the remainder of his sentence in home confinement. He is now 80 years old, suffers from severe health ailments, and has spent the majority of his life (nearly half a century) in prison," the White House said in a statement...

Pardoning Peltier has been a long-time goal for the left for generations.

I remember my high school teachers indoctrinating us all about this guy.

I wonder if he knows that he did this or if this is his staff shoving one more piece of paper under his nose to sign before he left.

I’ll wait for the extensive compilation. But, aren’t civil suits doable?

Clinton put out feelers that he was considering pardoning Peltier and within an hour the White House was surrounded by honking cars driven by FBI agents. The intent was clear - do this and we will surreptitiously release what we have on you; Clinton backed off.

“......indoctrinating....”

What do you mean “indoctrinating?”

Aren’t the facts clear that he murdered LE officers?

He’s still around? I remember seeing posters to “free Leonard Pelletier” back in 1982 at U of Chicago. I never heard the rationale for freeing him, though.

Quite a story killing FBI agents wow but the White House statement stunning describing Peltier as an old sick man with ailments I thought the statement was discussing Joe Biden.

There were contemporaneous arguments regarding this shooting. At the time I couldn’t see what the argument was about. It seems Peltier and friends, simply ambushed two FBI agents. In hindsight, it is more than possible that the FBI was lying. Their track record is not too good.

At about 9:30 am I posted on FR a question of whether or not Biden would pardon or commute Peltier. At that point he had not. I wonder if all his toadies in the FBI are happy?

The Joseph Biden constitutional amendment should be passed, limiting the president’s pardon power to his first two years, and to the last month prior to the succeeding presidential election.

This business of issuing controversial pardons while evading political consequences is just naturally got to stop.

Unlike the other pardons, this seems actually legit.
Pardoning somebody who served many years of jail sentence, on compassionate grounds, is what the constitution meant for president to do.
I do not like this particular one, but at least, it is constitutional.

Unlike the blanked pardons issued for family and collaborators! That’s nothing, but shame!
