Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday declared the 1974 agreement creating a UN-patrolled buffer zone between Israel and Syria null and void. In the wake of the fall of the al-Assad regime and the disappearance of Bashar al-Assad, Netanyahu ordered the IDF into the buffer zone. In particular, the IDF took possession of the 9,232-foot Mount Hermon, the highest point in Israel-Lebanon-Syria-Jordan.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today that the IDF has seized control of a U.N.-patrolled buffer zone separating the Israeli-occupied and Syrian-controlled Golan Heights.
Netanyahu said a 1974 agreement that established the zone of separation between the two countries had "collapsed" after Syrian soldiers abandoned their positions.
"We are acting first and foremost to protect our border," he said. "We will not allow any hostile force to establish itself on our border.”

The IDF will now fortify it and secure it against any outside threats, while warning Syria's new regime to back away from the Golan.

Addressing IDF soldiers atop Mount Hermon, Netanyahu put their movement in the context of the war initiated by Hamas in October 2023. He said, "You have been doing an outstanding job since the beginning of the war."
Netanyahu outlined the dual objectives facing the nation's military forces. In the south, the goal remains total victory, with a relentless pursuit of eliminating threats posed by Hamas and securing the release of hostages. Meanwhile, in the north, the mission is to restore security and bring back residents to the region.
"We will achieve security restoration in one of two ways: by military means, if required, or through political channels, if possible," Netanyahu asserted. He issued a stern warning to Hezbollah, emphasizing Israel's determination to safeguard its borders and ensure the safety of its citizens.
The new position on Mount Hermon is a game-changer in Israel's war with Hezbollah. From that peak, Israel can visually and electronically monitor any movements by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
“Syria? Wot Syria?”
Probably sooner than later Israel will have to fight our ‘friends’ now running Syria, so it’s smart to take all of the high ground possible before that happens.
I remember so many democRATS yelling that the USA had to honor all treaties with the USSR, long after the USSR ceased to exist.
Israel must never give it up.
Netanyahu, regional chieftain
Syrians should be glad the IDF is going no further than it needs to.
I always wondered why they gave up the Sinai after they took it from Egypt...unless they figured they couldn’t hold it with Syria/UAE knocking on the other door.
UAR*
EXCELLENT!!!!!
Heh, farg’n idiots. The treaty is likely dead but self protection abrogated the treaty. I have read that ordinance had been shot at Israel and that the IDF has been protecting the UN troops from being fired at by reblels. Of course the IDF is going to expand the buffer zone until the new administration of Syria is able to reign in thier gang.
Fargin media and politician idiots.
Would Orthodox monks in the mountain caves be known as Hermon's Hermits?
Every time we let a dictator fall, what follows is incomparably worse. I pray for the Christians; only Israel will act on their behalf, certainly not our lame duck demento.
Yeah, people in that region generally don’t do democracy. Their culture just isn’t there yet. They’re buried in the “strongman” stage, regardless of what form that strongman takes.
“Syrians should be glad the IDF is going no further than it needs to.”
Depends which batch of Syrians you’re referring to. I suspect you’re correct regarding the Islamic terrorist bunch that took over their government, but the several million Christians trapped there would, most likely, greatly prefer having Israel protecting them.
Go Bibi!
This is what leaders that care about their people do.

Uh, the new “administration” of Syria is likely to BE the gang. (of islamofascists)
ISLAM DELENDA EST
Read a few books as to how the Syrians would shoot rockets, mortars, raid the kibbutzniks( and others) and how they finally got the upper hand in the Yom Kuppur war 1973.
Redstate fools. “Israel-Lebanon-Syria-Jordan” has a collective name guys. It is called the Levant.
