While some schools across the nation hosted meagerly-attended “Transgivings” around Thanksgiving time, students at Hillsdale College wrote over 4,000 thank-you cards on the school’s annual “Day of Thanks.”
Throughout the day on Nov. 21, participating Hillsdale students wrote the thousands of grateful notes to “donors, family members, professors, friends, and others who have supported them throughout their lives and in their college careers,” a school news release stated.
Located in Michigan, Hillsdale has an undergraduate enrollment of a little over 1,500 students.
The idea for Day of Thanks came from Hillsdale’s students, who “came up with it as part of a student leadership group project,” vice president for student affairs Diane Philip told The Center Square.
“Their goal was to get everyone thinking about gratitude, especially toward the donors who help make so much possible,” Philip said. “But it’s not limited to donors – students can write to anyone they want.”
Day of Thanks is “led by the student activities team,” Philip said.

It'd be interesting to track this coming Spring's graduates from both Hillsdale and Yale and see where they are at ten years from now.
“While students at Hillsdale focused on thankfulness, Yale, Oakland University, and Northern Michigan University each hosted an event called “Transgiving,” around the Thanksgiving season.
“Celebrate trans joy, resilience, and community!” Yale’s LGBTQ Center posted on its Instagram page concerning the Transgiving held on Nov. 18. The post received 28 likes at a school that’s undergraduate enrollment was nearly 7,000 in 2023.
The event was hosted by Beyond the Binary and the Gender Resources Committee, according to the post.”
So much respect for Hillsdale.
I’ve had ‘thank you’ phone calls from Hillsdale students.
They were NOT looking for another donation.
Mighty Hillsdale. The true definition of class.
$50k+ annual tuition, and the universities still promote “giving” guilt onto the students & families footing the insane costs. It’s abusive BS
Gratitude in one of the keys to happiness. Even in the depths of loss if you remember to thank God for the time you had, it lessens the burden.
“Gratitude is one of the keys to happiness. Even in the depths of loss if you remember to thank God for the time you had, it lessens the burden.”
That is so true. It’s why I try to remember to thank God each day for His Blessings.
I thanked my parents for all they did for us children growing up to make our household a happy one even on a very limited income. I thank God that I retired just before the time my mother’s health started going downhill and was able to spend time with her and show the love to her that she showed to me.
And I thank my husband for having put up with me for 45+ years.
We lament over things that go wrong in our lives, but very seldom stop to count our Blessings and name them one by one.
These young men and women are learning valuable lessons in this endeavor.
What is the track record of Hillsdale graduates? What occupations do they occupy?
I know this is a tough question. I used to get the terrific newsletter by post. Curious.
We get their newsletter at our household.
“Hillsdale seniors consistently receive jobs with Big Four accounting firms, financial service firms, and investment banking and portfolio management companies upon graduation.”
Here is a PDF of their job placement of 2024 graduating class.

You know, I think any student -- young or old -- could get a fine education in We the People citizenship by reading Hillsdale's monthly Imprimis newsletter.
And it's available to read for free on-line.
For example a Yale doctor sexually mutilating children might have a lot of money ten years from now... Or a Yale grad working for an insurance company that rips off taxpayers by getting sweetheart deals from paid off Congressmen... Lots of people who have made this country a nightmare graduated from top schools and 'make money'....
Very insightful.
The Trans thing is over and the new thing is having the Autism.
Is it promoting guilt or gratitude?
At Hillsdale, at least (and according to the article), the thank-you note writing is a student-led effort, in which the notes can be made out to anyone the student wants to thank. Participation was apparently optional, so coercion isn’t being employed.
I’m confused how promoting gratitude can be transmogrified into promoting guilt.
Hillsdale is an openly Christian college. Ironically, Yale was founded as one centuries ago, but my has is strayed.
I was referring to the “giving”, which is often financial, the other schools push. On the other hand, I like the simple gratitude approach that Hillsdale took.
