The Bureau of Land Management has made it official Tuesday — coal leasing will end in the Powder River Basin by 2041.
The move follows a court order in a federal lawsuit, Western Organization of Resource Councils et al. v. BLM. The judge on the case directed the BLM to redo its environmental analysis, and include both no-leasing and a limited coal leasing alternatives.
As a result of that analysis, the BLM said it has determined that “additional leasing of BLM-administered coal is not necessary, based on the current analysis in the Final Supplemental EIS. The analysis indicates that operating mines in the planning area collectively have existing leases with sufficient coal reserves to maintain project mine production levels into 2041.”
Copies of the complete record of decision are available for inspection at the BLM’s Buffalo Field Office and online.
The decision will block off 48.12 billion short tons of coal on 413,250 acres in the Powder River Basin, and has attracted widespread criticism in Wyoming, including Gov. Mark Gordon, who publicly pledged to fight the decision in court.

On Tuesday, Gordon reiterated his intent to fight the decision, which puts a date to coal’s demise in the state.
Wyoming has already spent $800,000 on a retainer for the high-powered Arlington, Virginia-based law firm of Consovoy McCarthy, which has argued multiple appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court.
“Despite Congress’ direction that federal lands under BLM control be managed for multiple uses, the Biden administration’s crusade against responsible coal extraction continues,” Gordon said in a press release. “Coal is a reliable, abundant energy resource. Its continued development is necessary to meet the nation’s ever-increasing energy needs.
“BLM’s decision intentionally ignores both the energy needs of our nation and the devastating economic impacts its decision has on Wyoming and its communities.”

No legislation was passed. This will be undone on 1/21/25.
Hold on.
Trump’s comin’
Why was this done in the first place? Religious reasons? GW?
Yup! Climate worshippers.
Who has oversight of the BLM? Let’s hope Trump guts that place and prosecutes the ones responsible for killing Levoy Finecum in cold blood.
NUKE THE UTTERY UNCONSTITUTIONAL BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!
I don’t think Black Lives Matter has jurisdiction.
BLM v. BLM?
These idiots say it will stop by 2041 but a lot can happen between now and 2041
Better to ban wildfires on BLM holdings.
BLM, like ATF, IRS EPA, DOE and other should GO!!!!!!
BLM started a while ago. There are historical reasons for it, but those are long gone!
By now, it should disband itself, all the land should be orderly, according to market conditions, sold to highest bidders.
Many should be applied to pay for national debt!
Bump
Note: there is very little State owned Land in Texas, unlike our western cousins.
Land grant colleges own a large part of it, in Texas.
“By now, it should disband itself, all the land should be orderly, according to market conditions, sold to highest bidders.”
Bill Gates? No 4-wheeling for you.
As usual, government is the problem.
“Who has oversight of the BLM? Let’s hope Trump guts that place and prosecutes the ones responsible for killing Levoy Finecum in cold blood.”
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is an agency within the United States Department of the Interior responsible for administering U.S. federal lands. President-elect Trump has announced Doug Burgum, governor of South Dakota, as his nominee to lead the Dept of Interior.
Land within the boundaries of a state constitutionally belong to the state and its residents (Art. I, Sec. 8, Cl. 15; Amendments IX, X) and are NOT subject to sweeping federal grabs or sale.
The feds will NEVER “disband itself”. As Reagan used to say, the closest thing to eternal life on this side of heaven is the birth of a federal bureaucracy.
Wrap your head around the fact that MOST of the federal gov’t is unconstitutional, harmful, and threatening. The unconstitutional portion MUST be dismantled and abolished if America is to recover her Free Constitutional Republic.
The federal gov’t is NOT you friend but rather the greatest threat to your life, liberty, and free pursuits.
VIVEK FOR 2028 TO EXTEND AND EXPAND MAGA!!!
NUKE THE BLM!!!!
And Lee Zeldin is Trump’s nominee to be EPA administrator. Maybe between Burgum and Zeldin, we can get the management of federal lands back on the right track, and preferably return most of the control over the lands back to the states.
