Europe has just lived the most extreme week in terms of military escalations since the Cold War era, and from everywhere in the old continent all we hear is war.
So, it’s symbolic – whether he intended it to be or not – that the heir to the British throne, Pince William, has chosen to join in the live firing training of the Welsh Guards.
The Prince of Wales was wearing his combat uniform and beret to inspect how soldiers are preparing for duty in the Field Army.
The Telegram reported:
“The Prince, who is Colonel of the Welsh Guard, joined the 1st Battalion on Salisbury Plain as part of a training exercise, sitting down to fire a .338 sniper and lying on his front to use a 7.62 GPMG machine gun.
He was also given a tour of the training ground, while using binoculars, and will view weapons including Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems drones.”
William joined a battalion that has been on ceremonial duty in events such as the funeral of Elizabeth II, Charles’ Coronation and Trooping the Colour.
Now they will head back to the Field Army, with maintenance training on weapon systems.
The Royal was initially expected to watch the demonstrations, but he chose to participate.
“Prince William has completed his own military training, joining Sandhurst after graduating university in 2005 for a 44-week course as an Officer Cadet.”
Colonel William is no novice: served in attachments to the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Navy, and worked as a search and rescue pilot.
“Prince William joked that he would “make sure” his father did not “squeeze in” any more ceremonies requiring the service of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, so that they could get back out into the field now their two-year ceremonial deployment was coming to an end.”
William used a pair of binoculars to view the action.
“’Absolutely’, he said, when asked if he wanted to try the weapons himself. ‘I’m just glad you have got nice weather for it given the weekend’.”
He reportedly spent some time chatting to the six-strong sniper team,
“William said: ‘Really decent training then? Is it good to be back out? It’s good to get out of ceremonial, isn’t it. You guys have done more than your fair share of that, I’m sorry. It’s been fairly busy this year. You’ve only got a few more days. It’s not long. I’m going to make sure my father doesn’t squeeze in too many more moments!’”
Let’s hope these Welsh Guards don’t get out of ceremonial work right into a major European war.
