I’m not sure, but I don’t think Ellen directly accused Peter Carr; I think she told her husband that she had heard that the Carrs had confessed.
I still think that Randolph makes the most sense; but we may never know.
We can all disagree without being disagreeable!
That loveable old sinner Franklin is impossible not to like - even as he cut a swath amongst the impressionable ladies of France. You just have to like the man. I hope that his many good qualities are counted unto him for righteousness.
By comparison, T.J. strikes me as I think what Jamestown called a "cold fish." Correct but not very loveable. I don't really hold a brief for him -- but coming from the South where everybody is always beating us about the heads over "the peculiar institution" I bristle a bit when the Usual Suspects go on the attack.
My thesis was on the home front in the Civil War - and I read a ton of original (and unpublished) correspondence and got to know those folks fairly well . . . and their unvarnished thoughts and opinions since they never expected anyone outside their immediate family to read their letters. It was surprising and not at all what you would expect. Two of them were my gg grandfathers, both Confederate soldiers (one was captain of an artillery battery, and one a private in the cavalry. Their letters are certainly different, written from different points of view!)
It is interesting to read what our ancestors wrote. The oldest letters I have read in our family line were written during WWII. My family tree does not branch a long way back in this country. I can trace it only to Ellis Island. My g-grandparents lived in another country, and English was not their native tongue. (Supposedly, one branch stretches back further, but I have not been able to verify that claim.)
I’ve been contemplating joining one of the online genealogy sites. Supposedly they have more sources.
Very helpful and insightful, thank you.
I found a lot of information on free online genealogy sites. It’s been a while since I’ve used them, though.
