It's going to take some time for Ryan Beierman's scars to heal, but he's alive and well today thanks to the quick thinking and good aim of his 12-year-old son Owen. The father and son were on a bear hunt in western Wisconsin earlier this month when Owen spotted a 200 pound black bear emerge in a clearing. Owen fired a shot and struck the bear, but it ran off into the thick brush.
Ryan says he and his son waited about 20 minutes for the bear to bleed out before trying to track it. [....]The elder Beierman says he and his son were trying to make their way through a thicket when the dog suddenly turned tail and ran away. Moments later, the Beierman's spotted the injured bear... still alive and only a few feet away.

Beierman says he continued to punch the bear as it was on top of him, but it was another shot from Owen's rifle that allowed him to escape.

I was confused about our location so I pulled out my phone to look at my compass. My left cheek was sliced open and blood was oozing out of the flap. There were two fang marks in my forehead and my face was smattered with blood. My phone didn’t recognize my face so I punched in the code to open it.

While Beierman is rightfully proud of his son's quick thinking, my guess is that dad's parenting had something to do with Owen's ability to respond under pressure instead of freezing up. Owen may be the hero of this story, but Ryan and his wife deserve some credit as well for raising such a brave and courageous kid who made the most important shot of his life when it counted.

Not many 12 year old kids can do that under such pressure.
‘Not many 12 year old kids can do that under such pressure.’
Same’s true of adults. I gave my brother a .38 special for the house and even with repeated suggestions he still hasn’t pulled the trigger. It’s probably time to get it back.
...his phone didn’t recognize his face....
Well... Just... Damn....
How inconvenient....

Yeah, the time to learn how to operate a firearm and how a particular gun fires it not at the moment you need it and while under extreme pressure. I hope he at least knows if it is loaded and where the safety is located.
When you go out specifically intending to hunt a wild animal, the gauntlet is thrown down. You get what you sought to inflict.
My only fear would be urgency to take a shot vs. the chance of shot also hitting Dad vs. waiting for a clear shot.
More people are injured or killed by black bears than Grizzlies or Polar, do we need to ban them?
Those parents are raising a real man.
God bless them.
What do you do with the dog?
“What do you do with the dog?”
The dog figured his job was done once the injured bear was discovered. He skedaddled on back to the truck to pop open a cold one.
It evidently isn’t a “bear dog”...
( I used to hunt with Plott Hounds)

Safety on A.38....
Nikki Haley would take care of that dog.
Now, that’s a word I love....”skedaddled”...LOL
I think you meant Kristi Noem.
Correct. Sorry.
No worries. I confuse them myself.
“Now, that’s a word I love....”skedaddled”...LOL”
I love the word. It’s so expressive!
Using it also shows my age. LOL.
