On May 3, 2024, a Florida Okaloosa County Sheriff Deputy shot and killed Senior Airman Roger Fortson. The deputy, Eddie Duran, was responding to a false, anonymous tip about supposed domestic violence in an apartment complex.
Fortson was playing with his dog and on the phone with his girlfriend. When Roger Fortson realized someone was insistently knocking on the door and demanding entry, he accessed his legally owned pistol, and with the pistol held by his side, pointed at the floor, opened the door.
After an internal investigation by the Sheriff’s Department, Fortson was fired. The Sheriff’s Office did not file criminal charges as the incident was being criminally investigated by an independent agency, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. AmmoLand covered the tragic incident four months ago.
“I hope this brings about change and it teaches others that you can’t just kill people,” his mother Chantemekki Fortson said Friday after learning of the charges. “Because he should have waited for back up. And investigated a little more.”

Half of the sheriffs are below average.
How many airmen were shot? The title implies more than one.
Initially reading the title, I first assumed that it meant that the former deputy was shooting at airplanes (and the pilots) from his (the deputy's) home. From his front porch maybe?
Then I assumed that the former deputy had shot the airmen (plural?) in his (the deputy's) home ... like a home invasion?
I know .. I know .. I'm so easily confused these days.
Never open the door. Peep hole, talk through it.
I agree but this has to be a winner in the WEIRD names category - “his mother Chantemekki”. I’m sorry but that’s just plain weird....
On the off-chance that the individual may be armed, I also installed 3'x 5' plate of 1" steel onto the 2x4 studs beneath the window and behind the sink for a place to duck.
If it was shoot first ask later, the deputy would have been shot through the door smart ass.
Opening the door with a handgun at his side, was a fatal choice in this case, but plenty of people have done that for decades. People
Cop should be charged with 2nd degree murder.
Take your pansy ass back over to DU, and stay there. We don’t appreciate your BS here like the will.
"Stockdale and Whiteledge"
"Sounds like something out of the funny books."
You are thinking ahead.
WOW! Reminds me of a police raid from 1971! Anyone remember it?

Opening the door to your own home with a weapon ‘brandished’ and not brought to bear is foolish, no matter the details.
Regardless the officer’s poor decisions and the circumstances of his call to the address, there are lessons to be learned from such an encounter. Forston also made poor decisions (based upon the article details).
I mean, holy cow: A peephole is a lousy 5-10 bucks and wi-fi camera options start at under 20.
I should add that after the Ken Ballew raid(1971) there was a bumper sticker among gun owners.
“KEN BALLEW COULD BE YOU!”
Now , “Senior Airman Roger Fortson COULD BE YOU!”
“there are lessons to be learned from such an encounter.”
Agreed.
Whoever swatted him should be charged with manslaughter, as well.
That will probably stop .50BMG ...
closed circuit and metal plates, much better than a peep hole with a thin wooden door.

Already thought of the door ... heavy solid metal door with a 3" throw deadbolt and hidden hinges with 3" deck screws into the 4x4 frame . In fact, it almost worked against me. When my wife had a seizure while I was at work, she was just able to get to the phone and call 911. But she was collapsed in the front bathroom, the front door was locked, and I was at work. It took the Sheriff's Department, EMS, and the fire department almost 45 minutes to break through the door. They didn't even waste the effort and try the windows. I had to rebuild the area around the front door and purchase another door replacement.
It depends on the steel. Some 1" steel will stop a .50 cal, some will not. It is right on the edge of what a .50 will penetrate.
“Do you need to be armed in your own home? “
Where do you think is best to be armed??
More people are killed in their home than anywhere else.
Anti-gun liberals are bigots. You claim people shouldn’t have guns in public and to keep them at home, now you idiots claim not to have them in the home, either.
They fired him, they didn’t do the investigation that was done by outside people. He’s being charged with manslaughter, looking at 30 years in prison.
