If you want to call it that, knock yourself out.
But for those who don’t know, Turkey officially changed its name to Türkiye (in English often written as Turkiye) in December 2021. This change was formalized when the United Nations agreed to recognize the country’s new name on June 2, 2022.
The name change was initiated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who argued that “Türkiye” better represents Turkish culture and values. The word “Türkiye” (pronounced “Tur-key-yeh”) is how the country has been known in Turkish for centuries.
This change was part of a broader effort by the Turkish government to rebrand the country and distance itself from associations with the bird of the same name in English.
