On August 20, 2024, Tyler Johnson, 32, and his father, Chris, were backpacking and hunting on the Resurrection Trail in Alaska. The trail is in the Chugach National Forest South of Anchorage, across the Turnagain arm of Cook’s Inlet. The north end is just South of Hope, Alaska. The trail is about 38 miles long. On the first day, the Johnsons had hiked in about 15 miles. The weather was great; it was about 64 degrees, and it was mostly sunny. Both men were in excellent physical shape. Hiking 15 miles in the mountains with heavy packs in a day indicates they were in top form.
As shown in the video, the father, Chris, had a rifle strapped to his pack. Chris carried a .40 caliber Glock in a chest rig. Tyler had a 10mm in a hip holster attached to his pack. At present, it is not certain what make or model the pistol was. Brief images in the YouTube video show a pistol alongside Tyler. At a best guess, it is a Springfield XD or a S&W 2.0.
On the second day, they did some hunting. Father and son set out hunting again on the third day, enjoying the scenery and the weather, following an old trail. In many places, the brush was very thick and very difficult to get through. Tyler’s father, Chris Johnson, was in the lead. The track led across a small creek into a sort of funnel of brush, then opened out into a clear area. Tyler had taken about five steps into the clearing. The clearing was covered with knee-high grass.
Grizzly bear which attacked Tyler Johnson
Tyler explained what happened in more detail in a video interview with alaskasnewssource.com.

Tyler Johnson, shortly after the bear attack he stopped with his 10mm pistol.
One question. How much did the helicopter ride cost them? I mean, it’s not like Uber, is it?
They probably didn’t have time to be scared it happened so fast. That has to be a terrifying ordeal. The bear seems to have been waiting to ambush them. I’m sure the bear heard or smelled the men. I’m glad they were both armed with guns that could stop a grizzly bear.
Know 10mm is very popular these days for bear but in an actual encounter you will not need more than than 2 rounds. I prefer the reliability of a 44 mag revolver. Even 357.
Ironically, I’m designing the rest of my new hiking kit around a 40 cal crossdraw on Molle vest and a 10mm in a holster of indeterminate type in a thigh rig.
Currently, I can’t decide between a Kydex or semi rigid type, but one thing is certain: I already decided against ALS or the like (i.e., L2). The current 40 holster I have is a vertical draw and has a snap retention on the velcro strap which, as I’ve tested, permits a panic draw without releasing the snap by the thumb.
Additionally, I’ve been practicing panic draws on retreat and while prone on my back. Another irony; then again...
Interesting encounter. Lucky guy.
Re the story: I just can’t wrap my head around why he would have chosen to attach the 10mm to his pack...and his holster almost killed him, to be clear.
What we need is sensible holster laws
There is a secret service agent available to teach you to holster the handguns. /s
I must happened to watch that YouTube video yesterday. Scary.
Heh. Careful: At least I/we still have the unencumbered freedom to choose absent atf BS on that topic.
LOL.
But I’d have had a difficult time coming off guard waiting for a helo rescue next to a dead bear for 90 minutes while ensuring my son didn’t bleed out.
And I’d have been holding his reloaded 10mm... (or my own, i.e., not the 40)
Yep. Just a matter of time before they come up with some asinine law that holsters will have to secure pistols with a combination lock if carried outside the home or some such nonsense.
That SatPhone was a good idea, eh?
Comfy chair and
No Bears suits me fine
At this time
But I’ll prepare!
I carried the same holster for a decade or better.
It does take a bit more learning curve and more practice to become efficient with it.
The benefit of it you well not lose your handgun during physically activity.
I seen more then one handgun hit the ground after coming out of lessor holsters.
Gun beats No Gun.
Balls to the wall! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbmx3_RH5YY
I love these guys and how cool he is in the video. Just minutes after almost being killed or maimed for life. Where the attacking bear was even on top of him.
He unloaded his pistol like a mf’er (his words) to kill the bear on top of him. His father was unloading too.
