I don’t know if newspapers were ever really trustworthy - Mark Twain said if you didn’t ready the news you were uninformed and if you did read it you were misinformed. But many towns would have a couple of competing newspapers, so you could at least get an alternative view, not like today’s vast leftist echo chamber.
