Dear Freeper Sportslovers,
Does this Australian Rules football hit, which caused permanent brain damage to Angus Brayshaw, look like "A Football Act" or criminal assault?
One commentator said Maynard, the player wearing black and whit stripes, couldn't stop.
Another said he had a duty of care to himself to rotate his own body to avoid behind hurt by colliding from above with Brayshaw's head.
Under the rules of the game 18.3.2 (c). it is illegal to make high contact to an opposition player with any part of the body.
Under 18.3.2 (f) makes it illegal to charge at an opposition player.
In my opinion Brayden Maynard charged at Angus Brayshaw and made a collision inevitable.
Brayshaw retired prematurely. His club gave him an off field leadership role but he was unable to do it.
His life is ruined.
Modern awareness of how damaging concussion can be will force changes.

I d be one a bit of a Collingwood Magpies fan since my weekend drinking buddy is a local AFL coach and I’ve had a chance to see a few community league games and watch last years final. Damned good sport, right up there with Rugby Union.
Janet,
thanks for adding the Rumble option
Geoff
It doesn’t look criminal to me. One threw the ball and the other jumped to try and get the ball and they collided. Unfortunately, if somebody became seriously injured, but it looks like an accident to me.
That first part should be. “I’ve become a bit of a”.
Rugby is the purest sport there is and much more enjoyable to watch than American football or soccer.
The defender went airborne and the offensive player ran into him.
Tough sport played by real men
Flukes happen
Guy in black w white stripes should not have gone airborne and placed his shoulder on the other guys head

When you’re in the air, there isn’t much you can do.
I agree.
Thanks Steve.
I’m probably the only one on this thread who killed a guy in high school football, he was hit during scrimmage and collapsed and died a day or days later.
While I regretted him dying and missed seeing what was becoming of our recent start of friendship, I never felt guilty because it was sports, Texas high school football and it was a clean hit.
Looks like an accident to me too. Neither player is wearing any kind of pads and as such both are susceptible to injury. It did not look harsh or deliberate. A bit freakish actually since it didn’t look all that hard to me.
Pre-existing injury? Didn’t see many folks out there wearing helmets, but the injured guy was wearing head protection? (He’s the only one I saw with a helmet, but I might have missed someone.)
Looked like an attempt to block the kick, and it didn’t look like an intentional strike to the head.
There may be an element of a flop involved, where somebody fakes being injured so the opponent gets carded.
Me either for the points you said. If he had come down on the Vella with a punch or clothesline attack, then yeah, but he didn’t,
Definitely. I went to soccer match with a friend since he had free tickets and I found even live, soccer is still a horrible, miserable, stupid and boring game. The only fun I had was due to the booze and fans the fans having fun.
If you want to lay a big shot on someone, that is not how you do it. You wanna see a legal but absolutely vicious hit? Here ya go.

Keep your head down, run at full speed and go straight into the man. Don’t jump up and try to block the ball like the guy in the Aussia rules football game did in that clip.
That’s sad but it happens. A certain number of high school football players suddenly drop dead from undiscovered heart ailments every year too. Again said but that’s nobody’s fault its just really unfortunate.
