Head of grid watchdog warns that retiring coal and gas plants driving increased blackout risks

Assessments by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which analyzes the continent’s electricity supply reliability, have been warning that large portions of the U.S. grid are threatened with increased risks of blackouts.

Jim Robb, CEO of NERC, said that risk is growing as more than 100 billion watts of thermal power generation, meaning coal- and natural gas-fired power plants, is slated for retirement over the next 10 years.

Absolutely right.
It is plain madness to shut down natgas plants.
They are, on the whole, extremely cost effective backup units.

Coal is going away because of the increasingly high cost of operating a coal-fired power plant (you have to ship in the coal by rail and the cost of emission controls for coal-fired power plants is now ridiculously expensive). Gas is staying around because we have a large pipeline infrastructure in place and gas burns far cleaner than coal.

What a surprise. Replace inexpensive reliable coal and NG power with expensive unreliable rainbow and unicorn fart generation and your risk of blackouts goes up. Who could have possibly predicted that? (Other than anyone except Democrats and climate crazies). For any climate fool reading this try an experiment. Turn off your power when the sun goes down and turn it back on again at sunrise. In addition pick ten random 4 hour blacks a week during the day and shut it off then. Congratulations you’ve experience now what you voted for in the near future.

I always wondered what JR’s day job was.

Anyone with any knowledge of electrical grids whatsoever knows this. I’m glad to hear someone with integrity is a talking about it in an honest way.

A large, at the mine, coal plant could generate electricity on site for making hydrogen or aluminum etc. The cascade recoverable waste heat could be used to dry apricots or something.

“Assessments by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation,”

Forget that. Frequently occurring electric power outages are needed to get the public’s attention.

This is why we need a Federal Mandate for ALL Public Employee’s Nationwide to exclusively use EV Vehicles for ALL TRAVEL in perpetuity.

Or

Build a massive (square kilometers) solar plant in the dry Intermountain West and crack the scarce water in Green H2. Store that underground, then later burn that H2 in a turbine generator, and ship the electricity to SoCal.

Sound like BS?

Nope. Real world stuff - https://burbank.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=9491&meta_id=385554

And the loons in Cali will pay out the wazoo for power. I’m fly with that...

Once the crap hits the fan and the sheeple get angry enough, the democRAT will blame all this on MAGA republicans, just like they done on racism, KKK, etc.

I know of 2 coal burning plants on the east side of Michigan that were serviced by freighters on the rivers, looked very cost effective to me. The closed them down and built new natural gas. And of course prices have gone up at least 50% since.

...then later burn that H2 in a turbine generator...

Sounds like something the Dims would support us going to...about 4 or 5 years before they start demanding we ban it. Just like they did with what they used to call "clean burning natural gas".

The solution is never to try to find an energy method that satisfies the greenie Dims -- they always change their minds with the intent of being unhappy. The solution is to tell the greenie Dims to pound sand and we produce power however we want.

The only way "alternative" energy is good is if it's the only way you can produce power on your own so that you don't have to worry about the Dims regulating away your family's access to energy.

I spent 31 years in a coal fired plant. after Obama came in, so many of them were shut down. Our local plant was supposed to be shut down but the company found it more ecconomic to upgrade to Obama’s demands as we were the lowest cost coal fired plant in the company.

Other plants shut down...Page AZ, Waterflow NM, Kirtland NM. Lignite plants in Texas...and many others.

Coal is going away because of government. They DISALLOW it. In the last 10 years, they worked to rid us of coal usage, not clean up the emissions. All this, while the stuff we buy comes from a nation that burns coal in an 19th century manner. We had two coal fired plants here locally. Run by a company, that mined the coal all around them. This is in W Washington state BTW. The mines panned out after years, then they brought in coal from other parts of the US. They were planning on switching to NG, but the government shut that down. We have one plant left, it shutters in Jan 2025. We will now draw from the wind and the rivers, which they are now seriously speaking of blowing up the dams. For the first time ever, they warned about blackouts, to PREVENT blackouts from forest fires that MAY happen. This in a State with so many hydroelectric facilities, I can’t begin to count. No nuclear plants, but they are talking of putting solar farms where the old nuclear facilities were in Richland/Tri cities area to help compensate.

They put butter on the wound of our local coal fired power plant closing, by promising to use it to make Hydrogen. The State spent billions on that, now have dropped that proposal, because it was just a hole they wanted to shovel money into and blind the public.

It is seriously time to change our elected officials en masse. If any are voting for all of the incumbents, you are idiots. Choose those who love Liberty, and keep them, the rest need to be permanently retired and stripped of all honor and monies.

100% Everything the communists push as alternatives, are purposely set up to fail. I remember the Billions maybe Trillions that Obama was going to spend to fix America. He could have built 50-100 nuclear power plants and fixed the power supply problem for decades. NOPE, he wasted it on greenmail for D districts.
