The ATF agent was there to verify the serial number on the firearm and the ATF provided the gun history which was used to identify Crooks Dad.

The ATF is not supposed to readily have access to a customer’s serial number.

Serial number to Ruger, then to distributor, then store, then visit the store to view the 4473. That is a 45 second job, right?

UNless somehow the ATF had the number already? Planned this ahead of time?

Or maybe PA has a database, which would speed things up. And they are not supposed to, either.

Anyway you don’t need the ATF to access Pennsylvania’s database, just State Dept of Justice.
