This is why Biden is rushing to get that virtual nomination approved before Democrats can organize to replace him. Democrats are screwed as all of their courses of action are bad and worse.

Biden drops out, stays as president and continued controversy about his lack of competence for that, which will bury Democrats by distraction.
Biden drops out and resigns, Harris as president is then likely candidate and should have Biden/Harris funds though I wouldn't put it passed the Biden family to try to stop that.
Party tries to bypass Harris and intra-party civil war.

I don't think the dems will let biden drop out at this point. They would rather have him take the fall in November since his political career is done. They can regroup for 2028.
Why put an 'up and comer' or someone with a future in the dem party in front of the Trump freight train this time around? There is too much momentum for Trump right now.
Makes more sense to punt and to try again in 2028 where the entire field on both sides will be a clean slate.
