That's a pretty short reply for me, but as I was almost ready to post, I was disrupted by an emergency bird rescue. So to add that in because it fits in:
A juvenile blackbird was down hard after hitting the door window, lying on the deck with one wing outstretched. These birds are a real nuisance at the feeders but this little fellow needed help.
I picked him up and within a few seconds he was scrambling to fly away. That's the idea -- normally great, but he wasn't in any condition to depart so he flew straight into the deck railing. Wei Tu Lo. Thud. Ouch.
Now he really was in a world of hurt, down again, beak gaping wide open, and his eyes rapidly "blinking", flashing a blue-white light like it was some kind of code. I'd never seen that and I've done a lot of these rescues. Never had blackbird hit, though.
He was upright and fairly alert all considering, but this time he was in no rush to go anywhere. I finally decided to walk around to the front porch so we could sit in the shade. As I held him in my open hand, we had a long chat about not taking off without being ready first. After about 20 minutes, he flew into a tree, up high, no problems this time.
