UNC Was Right to Call the Cops. A wise society enforces neutral laws before violence occurs.

The recent protests at UNC are only one example of the unrest at several campuses across the U.S. (albeit mostly “elite” ones) in response to events in the Middle East. By April 2024, protests had been going on for months at UNC. An escalation occurred when, after students at Columbia University introduced the tactic of encampments on their campus—i.e., camping out in a public space—the tactic spread to other universities, including Carolina.

While free expression, including protests, are extended broad license on campus (especially at public universities), they still must comply with university policies and government laws regarding time, place, and manner. This is federal law and complies with current interpretations of the First Amendment. These restrictions often include where and when protests may take place and are set up to enable the university to continue to function and faculty and students to proceed with the learning process. Creating ongoing tent cities on areas like the quad is one of the modes of expression not allowed at most universities, as doing so creates safety, health, and other functional issues that interfere with university operations.

At UNC, between April 26 and April 30, protesters had erected a tent city and taken other actions that were violations of university policy and state law. When made aware of these infractions, the protesters refused to take down their encampment. On April 30, when ongoing negotiations had led nowhere, UNC brought in police to remove the encampment. After warning people to leave to avoid arrest, the police cleared the encampment. In the end, they detained 36 protesters, a considerable number of whom were not Carolina students.

…Obama Biden paid for goons. Give em a carton of smokes, a vape, grass and a $20 bill and they’ll raise hell like there’s no tomorrow. I really don’t get the “negotiation” BS. Do they “negotiate” during a rape? An assault with a deadly weapon?

They were breaking state and campus law. The tents never should have been erected in the 1st place

UNC

I assume that means University of North Carolina and a state government-run establishment.

Generally, government-run establishments are expected to be somewhat tolerant of non-violent, non-destructive protest activity.

In California, the lazy can camp out on the public streets and sidewalks.

The Supreme Court has not said they can’t.

[Note: Some homeless consume meth so they can stay awake all night and prevent the theft of their stuff.]

“non-violent, non-destructive protest activity”

If people were being harassed and/or intimidated, then the university would need to terminate it.

UNC-CH is a liberal sh*thole. State is run by libtard governor. NC has a good chance of becoming another Virginia.

You can speak your mind. You do not get to inconvenience others though. You don’t get to block traffic or camp out and block public spaces, occupy buildings etc. That is no longer speech. Those are acts of aggression against others and anyone who engages in the above should be punished for it.

The liberals own every share university and most of the private ones. For the past twenty-five years, 97 percent of all college professors consider themselves at minimum socialists.

I’m always amazed when I see the majority of conservative parents send their kids off to public institutionalized schooling and then onto more severe leftist indoctrination centers, and think we can “turn this country around.”

They always think that “they go to a good school” or “yea!!! My kid got into this college.”

We should be refusing to volunteer our children and young adults bodies and minds for their leftist causes.

There are other options. Many are superior in standards, academics, and other criteria.

Should say “state” and not “share.”

Supreme Court to rule on homeless ability to “camp” almost anywhere very soon.

I assume that means University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was a student there 1950-54. Do they still have the statue commemorating students killed in the Civil War, or have they pulled it down? There was a joke that the statue fired its musket every time a virgin walked past.
