in 1986 -- 33+ years ago -- Donald Trump was lauded by New York City for revitalizing Wollman Rink and honored by Mayor Ed Koch. This is our coverage of the event.

Trump did in 3 1/2 months what the city couldn’t do in 6 years.
What’s really AMAZING about the video is not Trump, but how classy Mayor Koch was in being upstaged by Trump.
The world was a different place back then, or at least this country was a different place.
The Wollman skating rink had been a leaf-filled decaying hole in the ground for about twenty years.
The NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation said it would cost something like $20 million (like $75 million today) to fix it.
Trump had it all fixed up in a matter of weeks, and he paid for it himself.

Many others failed at the same job of getting the rink up and running.
What Trump did - that was brilliant - is he asked himself who would be best at dealing with ice rinks. And he came up with the answer: Canadian companies that were used to dealing with ice. The rest is history.

Trump is the best Project Manager on the planet. No one realizes it because they don’t see Trump in that lens. Everything he does is a project, with a clear beginning and end. He manages risk, knows how to communicate and follows a strict process.

He didn’t pay for it himself. He told TPTB that if he didn’t finish in the time, and with the budget, that he promised he would pay for it himself. He kept his promise.
He finished the project on time and under budget!
