Not exactly chased, but while in college in 1983, a white pal and I were up late and went to the only place open for a sandwich at 4 AM. . . Hayatt's Submarine Sandwiches on 51st and Cottage Grove. While we were waiting for our order, two melanin-enriched fellow who were also waiting starting recounting the plot from "Roots", and loudly and clearly speaking in our direction what they would like to do too the kind of people who mistreated Kunte Kinte. The employee was safely behind bullet-proof glass (a little Lazy Susan was used for exchange of cash and goods. Nothing came of it, but we sure kept our heads down.

Another time I was on a date in downtown Chicago on my birthday. We were outside walking, and another enriched fellow suggested he would "take my lady from me" (and not in the "win her heart through charm" kind of way). I reflexively responded "Try it." She was not particularly conservative, but I could tell she liked my protective response.

After I graduated, I went back to Chicago for a visit, and I happened to be wearing some Clyde Frazier Puma sneakers. Best fitting sneakers I ever had. I got them at Lechmere for $35 on Clearance. A fellow passing in the opposite direction said "I'll take your shows." They were black suede with a red stripe ... Chicago Bulls colors. I was accidentally wearing "retro cool". I just kept on walking.

So, I wasn't chased (which is good. I was never fast.) but I was certainly threatened.
