How is it possible that in 1949 there were about half a million Palestinian refugees and today (according to UNRWA’s distorted definition) there are about 5.6 million?? What other refugee group has a UN body whose purpose is to ensure that the refugees maintain their status? I asked the ambassadors: How can you be a refugee from Palestine when you live in a Palestinian city? Don't you see the paradox?

That game is over. The Gaza “Refugee Camps” have been turned into literal dirt by the fleets of armored IDF D9 dozers. Hamas is being killed off in groups and now one at a time.
On 1948, some evil Arabs had some evil plans.
Those evil Arabs lost and third party Palestinians fearing Jewish revenge fled their homesteads, becoming refugees.
The victorious Jews whom the evil Arabs intended to slaughter soon realized things were better and safer with the Palestinians gone, so most third party Palestinians were not allowed back or offered acceptable compensation for their abandoned homesteads.
In 1945, a mere three years earlier than 1948, Germany and Germans lost about half of eastern Germany.
The Ottoman Empire lost all of Palestine in WWI.

You are missing the point. These “refugees” live in a Palestinian city. There are now more “refugees” than there were originally.
How can the children and grandchildren and great grandchildren, who were born in Palestinian cities, be refugees?
It’s akin to saying there are now 47.9 million slaves when the original 388,000 were freed back in the 1860’s.

By the dictionary definition of ‘refugee’, you are correct.
By the fact of living in a area for refugees since birth, they got to be considered as refugees and have been so treated since birth.
The refugee movements for 5-10 years after the end of WWII in 1945 dwarfed what happened to a relative few Arabs in Palestine/Israel. Somehow that all got sorted out one way or another, except for the “Palestinians”, who are still refugees from that era 75 years later. Because they were useful tools for the Muslims neighbors of Israel who want to clear out the Jews “from the river to the sea.”
The Biden administration will soon be chartering airplanes to bring many to the USA. Then they will be refugees by the dictionary definition too.
Some of these Palestinians might have lived in Jordan after 1948 until ‘encouraged’ to leave Jordan after Black September 1970.
