In a bizarre incident, 26 barges broke loose in Pittsburgh and drifted uncontrollably down the Ohio River on Friday night.
Shortly after the barges broke free, Pittsburgh authorities closed the McKees Rocks Bridge and the West End Bridge “out of an abundance of caution.”
Authorities reported that eleven barges were stopped by running into a river bank by Brunot Island, and now tugboats are on the scene pulling the barges out.
Nine were found stopped at the Emsworth Lock and Dam.
#UPDATE: Footage shows approximately 6-7 barges jammed up against the Emsworth Dam, with more expected on the way. Multiple bridges have been shut down, causing traffic disruptions. Additionally, more barges are on the loose after breaking free crews are watching the situation… pic.twitter.com/k2aBOcfUYi

The commander for the Pittsburgh district of the Army Corp of Engineers stated that a preliminary evaluation showed no damage to the dam, but extensive damage to a nearby marina was found.
How do 26 barges get loose? We have been doing this for more than two centuries. pic.twitter.com/C7Xb5DJYT1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Crews were working Wednesday to remove three remaining barges that got loose on the Ohio River, including one carrying methanol.
A total of 10 barges got loose early Tuesday on the river near Louisville, the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet said. Most were recovered, but the U.S Army Corp of Engineers said three were pinned against the McAlpine Locks and Dam and the locks are closed to traffic until the barges are stabilized, though river traffic was open through the use of the local vessel traffic services.
One of those barges was carrying 1,400 tons of methanol and was partially submerged, Kentucky officials said.

It probably does. No sarcasm.
But before the bridge crash, such stories were ignored. Now the media is suddenly interested in every shipping mishap, not matter how minor.
It's kind of like how, after the plane door came off, every Boeing defect is being reported.
The roar of the Ohio in the Spring...
Nascar could have done it
Why do barges break loose? Can’t find any info.
Does remind me a of story from 40 years ago. Person on the river told me they lost some barges on the Mississippi. They couldn’t find one of the barges that contained something not so good. The boss said to him, “suppose we ought to tell anyone?”
The river is very unpredictable in the spring.
I first read this article on the yahoo.com home page but when looking for it elsewhere have not come across it. I would have thought it was big news since two bridges in Pittsburgh are closed until possible damage is assessed.
HOW do barges break loose? Aren’t they secured with mooring lines fore and aft? Both lines failing at the same time? On 26 barges? Color me skeptical.
Just found it when I re-loaded The Liberty Daily. It was posted there as a headline story from Info Wars.
