KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Some of the people who attended the near-record cold Kansas City Chiefs playoff game in January had to undergo amputations after suffering frostbite, a Missouri hospital said Friday.

Research Medical Center didn't provide exact numbers but said in a statement that it treated dozens of people who had experienced frostbite during an 11-day cold snap in January. Twelve of those people — including some who were at the Jan. 13 game — had to undergo amputations involving mostly fingers and toes. And the hospital said more surgeries are expected over the next two to four weeks as “injuries evolve.”

I went to a St. Louis Cardinals football game around 1967 at the then-new Busch Memorial Stadium (ugliest stadium ever built). I was about 16 years old and that was the coldest I’ve ever been in my life. It sounds like the same cold-snap you were at.

“People are either softer, dumber or both.”

I think now a much greater proportion of people are diabetic from 1967 due to obesity. Also, there were more attendees from out of state for this year’s Super Bowl than the 1967 ice bowl.

Dumbest damned thing that I ever heard of. Kansas City residents have dealt with cold so there is no excuse. What makes this even more ridiculous is that indoor warmth was only moments away.

Fanatics will risk life and limb to watch a game.

Those fans would say it was all worth it.

Nature would say that, humans are not meant to play or even work, and perhaps not even live in extreme temperatures, hot or cold.

….how come none of the players ever lose digits in these situations?

They’re the ones not wearing parkas, gloves, etc.

It’s always the fans getting amputations or buried.

Luckily I wasn’t at the Ice Bowl as I was only four at the time. It’s been a legendary game told about many times and I’ve listened to it enough to think I was there but, alas, I was not
I’ve been cold before, -5 for a short time feeding the cattle and not sure about wind chill but I walked backwards to keep my face from getting frostbite.

This is true. Lots more obese people and not healthy. Diabetes rates have skyrocketed since then and their extermenties are prone to have deadened nerves for lack if circulation.
And liquor isn’t helping in any cases

Players do wear gloves although how well heat retaining an be debated
Plus the players are alot more healthy than your average, over weight, sedate office worker who over dashes from his house to his heated/air-condition car.

Considering how I’ve seen people dress for winter weather, this is hardly a surprise.

They still play a hockey “classic” tournament (high school) in Minnesota in one of the “classic” hockey towns up north. One of the star players from down in the cities got frostbite. Didn’t loose anything but had to sit out a few games.

Some people (fans) were upset that the tournament was still played in sub-zero temperatures. The coaches, players and player’s families all said “Hey - it’s hockey. And it’s cold in the winter.” The injured player said the same same thing.

The players are moving around. I used to cross country ski race and would wear a long underwear top and bottom with a shear one-piece nylon suit over it. If it was REALLY cold we would put a sock over our private parts as that got chilly coasting down the hills!

Of course before and after the race we all had down coats and heavy pants and hats, gloves, etc. My mom took snowpants and added full zippers down the legs so they could be taken off and put on while still having the skis on my feet.

I used to play hockey, outside, in Grand Forks. I don’t know how we could stand it either, but we did.

MFL anthem kneelers aren’t very bright. I think all MFL fans should have to undergo concussion protocol at least once every season.
