February 2024 witnessed a distressing surge in layoff announcements, marking the highest for the month since the global financial crisis of 2009, according to a report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The total of 84,638 planned job cuts represents a 3% increase from January and a worrisome 9% surge from the same month a year ago.
Tech industries, typically seen as pillars of stability, are grappling with a significant wave of layoffs, leading the pack with 28,218 job cuts. Despite this being a 55% decrease from the same period last year, the sheer volume underscores the challenges faced by even the most resilient sectors.

Step 2: Your employer takes it to market.
Step 3: Potential customers realize they no longer need to hire a programmer like you ... AI can do it.
Step 4: Lose your job.
I’ve been reading all day about the great number of jobs Jumpin’ Joe Pedo has created. Somebody is a lyin’ ass.
I just created a job today, for myself. Lost my job a year ago. Could not find another. So I bought into a franchise today.
Way to go. I wish you the best of luck. You did it without the cranky cracker’s help. Good luck!
“I just created a job today, for myself. Lost my job a year ago. Could not find another. So I bought into a franchise today.”
Congratulations! I wish you a great success!
LOL- they announce great numbers then retract them a month later....
Tucked into today’s jobs report was January’s report being revised down 125,000!!! I went from the announced 353,000 to under 230,000!!!
Every month they announce the “great” number, then the following month revise it downward 50,000+. The numbers are BS!!!
No Worries!
That ‘brilliant’ economist Nanny Pelousy once calculated that unemployment payments actually stimulate and increase economic activity.
Pelousy is an expert of one financial activity: stuffing her purse with other people’s money and insider information.
Impossible. Didn’t Joe tell us last night he created the greatest economy in the history of the world.
My son got it this week, in March.
Sigh......
Every month they announce the “great” number, then the following month revise it downward...
*************
It only seems logical that, over time, there would be both upward and downward adjustments in roughly equal numbers. Yet the revisions are almost always downward.
So the happy numbers come out first only to be followed by the real numbers a later late point when nobody’s looking. That’s their game.
That’s not what SloJoe told us last night.
The produce guy at our local Albertson’s had his hours cut from 40 per week to 28 per week. That’s not exactly a layoff but it’s getting close to it.
“I bought into a franchise today.”
Awesome! Best of luck to you. Hard work and long hours ahead to make a go of it, but I’m sure you’re used to that. Can you say what type of franchise you bought?
Prayers requested.
I received my notice this week. It was expected. Long term support of a system that has evolved and has been centralized. Meaning no locals needed.
What wasn’t expected was the level of difficulty just to get an interview. With my experience, degrees, certifications, and great recommendations, interviews are surprisingly elusive.
From my personal observations of other job seekers, I believe it may be because of not being one of the special check boxes.
Sorry to hear that. Good luck to your son!
Our daughter got it on Tuesday this week, too. Her old employer is really fouled up. She was due to speak at a MAJOR industry conference on Monday. The conference organizers tried to contact her on last minute details of her presentation and their emails to her bounced!! That’s how they found out she was let go. Can you imagine that staggering level of incompetence?
She’s done a lot of contract work and may start that back up. She has developed a good network and is already hearing from people.
I am surprised Albertsons could do this to someone’s hours grocery are union!!!
“...the real numbers a later late point when nobody’s looking”
Exactly right. The Good News boost is done and that’s what people remember. It’s the inverse of screaming BAD NEWS headlines about Trump or Republicans on Page 1, then a week later a tiny correction or retraction of the lie is at the bottom of page 29. People remember the front page bad news and never see the retraction.
