Another example is the film Lucy. Scarlett Johansson as the lead fighting evil forces. Made a fortune. It was a good movie with a female lead that people enjoyed. But it wasn’t about female empowerment. It was just a good movie.
Kill Bill was fun too; that was a Tarantino movie. A revenge theme. Worked great. It was a great story. Uma Thurman created the characters with Tarantino. There was subtext to it too - a woman wronged by an evil industrious man for merely wanting to keep her baby. You could read a lot into that theme.
