No, I respectfully disagree. As a working journalist/photojournalist they are not as intimidated by these situations. They do this stuff every day. In NY, I imagine covering Trump is an assignment they’ve had many, many times.
An outside observer would treat this with a reverence that someone doing it every day doesn’t have. It’s not “political” per se…it’s just that it’s their “job.” They are not impressed.
Another point of context—my wife covered MA politics from 1983 through 2005. So she had frequent interactions with Dukakis, Kerry, Kennedy, Andy Card, Mitt Romney and Bill Weld. The on the ground, front line coverage of these people included some off color and outrageous situations. Then the lights come on and everyone does their job.
It is easy to think all of these people are all serious, all the time. They are not.
Heck, I don't even think they're serious half the time while "on the record."
I get your point, though. I guess I think it is akin to joking about the gun in your pouch while boarding a plane.
And I doubt Bill Mallugin, for example, would make "let's kill him" funnies while waiting for Biden or Mayorkas to get out of a car.
My wife would tell you her first boss (and old radio guy) pounded into their heads that you never mess around in front of an open mic…and that ALL mics were open.
At the reporters Christmas party every year the most fun part was listening to the “out takes” from their reports. Not everyone treated open mics with that kind of reverence.

Why do you think that Biden keeps making these apocalyptic comments about Trump returning to power? To justify what they want to do to him.
