When I was in a state university in the 80’s, there was a huge uproar from the liberal arts staff whenever fewer courses were proposed or required for the science majors, pre-med, pre-vet, etc. professional tracks. It was all about protecting the jobs of those MA’s and PhD’s teaching the various studies and dead languages and dead writers, while pushing socialism and atheism. It has only become worse, it seems.
My German TA was a native born German living with an American family. One morning the parents in the household got into a shouting match. One of them uttered, "BFD". The full phrase in front of the little boy in the household. The German TA asked the little boy if he understood that phrase. His answer: "I think so. What's a deal?". Much laughter filled the classroom on that reply.
