The move to restrict NATO withdrawal options comes as Trump, eyeing a return to the Oval Office, vocally considers pivoting the U.S. to a less active role within the alliance, or departing altogether if his terms are not met.
However, this new bill would necessitate Senate approval or an Act of Congress to validate such a departure, hamstringing the Commander-in-Chief’s capacity to respond to real-time geopolitical dynamics.
Adding to the controversy is the provision, championed by Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), which effectively bars any U.S. President from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO without Senate approval or an Act of Congress. This clause is a direct countermeasure against potential actions by former President Donald Trump, who has expressed intentions to reevaluate or reduce the U.S.’s role in NATO should he return to office.

Way to empower the EU with leverage over the US President. A-holes.
Oh well, the Commander in Chief has endless options on how to marginalize NATO.
Friggin’ NATO. More worthless than the UN.
Jimmy Carter withdrew from the Panama Canal Treaty unilaterally.
Barry Goldwater then sued under the theory that since the Senate plays a role in getting the US into a treaty, it has to be involved in getting the US out of a treaty.
However, Carter’ treaty abrogation sttod.
There’s plenty of precedent.
And Trump himself pulled the US out of the INF treaty.
So let them sue if Trump decides to abrogate the NATO treaty.
What “authorization” was needed for the U.S. to join NATO.
Was congress involved in that decision?
Republicans continuing to help the Democrats to diminish the Executive Power of the Office of the President, something they’ve been assisting with for years now.
Does the house have to vote on it?
That’s right. They think they are being clever with this. Trump could cut our aid to a dollar close every base and leave nothing but 1 man army post office in Poland.
The senate voted on the Panama Canal treaty.
Why don’t they balance the budget?
The EU is almost dead so NATO is almost dead
On July 21, 1949, the US Senate voted to approve the North Atlantic Treaty for ratification.
Only the US Senate votes on treaties, not the house
The senate should vote on it. The Mansfield Amendment was before it’s time.
The senate should also vote on any Strategic Petroleum Reserve withdrawal. We can’t fill it up just so Biden can empty it.
The bill is toothless as it should be people. Article II of our Constitution grants power of foreign policy to the president.
When was Article II of the Constitution ratified?
See the following Articles (emphasis mine):
Article 10The Parties may, by unanimous agreement, invite any other European State in a position to further the principles of this Treaty and to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic area to accede to this Treaty. Any State so invited may become a Party to the Treaty by depositing its instrument of accession with the Government of the United States of America. The Government of the United States of America will inform each of the Parties of the deposit of each such instrument of accession.
Article 11
This Treaty shall be ratified and its provisions carried out by the Parties in accordance with their respective constitutional processes. The instruments of ratification shall be deposited as soon as possible with the Government of the United States of America, which will notify all the other signatories of each deposit. The Treaty shall enter into force between the States which have ratified it as soon as the ratifications of the majority of the signatories, including the ratifications of Belgium, Canada, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States, have been deposited and shall come into effect with respect to other States on the date of the deposit of their ratifications.
Article 13
After the Treaty has been in force for twenty years, any Party may cease to be a Party one year after its notice of denunciation has been given to the Government of the United States of America, which will inform the Governments of the other Parties of the deposit of each notice of denunciation.
Article 14
This Treaty, of which the English and French texts are equally authentic, shall be deposited in the archives of the Government of the United States of America. Duly certified copies will be transmitted by that Government to the Governments of other signatories.
The United States has been established as the custodians of the treaty. The spectacle of the United States withdrawing from the treaty by notifying itself, and then depositing the withdrawal into an archive that it will no longer maintain is comical at worst.
Like it or not, it appears that by treaty, the United States owns NATO, manages its processes, and therefore cannot withdraw itself from it without the whole thing falling apart entirely.
The United States withdrawing from NATO would be the western equivalent of the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain. It would be synonymous with the fall of the Soviet Union.

Trump should do it and dare them to impeach him.
“What ‘authorization’ was needed for the U.S. to join NATO.

The Senate ratified the Treaty in 1949.
