It is simple. Economics. If you are middle class the cost of a child is unaffordable on a single salary. It's been trending that way for years. Rewards be damned. It's simple to sacrifice a backyard swimming pool to have a child. But housing, safe neighborhood, good schools, food, transportation, health care are non-negotiable.

Free stuff for everyone else raises the cost on those who actually work to produce. Furthermore, because of the growth of managerialsm non productive jobs have grown in salary and importance compared to productive jobs [much of which we have already exported anyway].

I totally agree with you. Seems our very educated professional class has no real purpose* and has to create one from thin air. (See Critical Theory).
They attempt to seize the moral authority over society with their whim of the day and do not consider human nature which hasn’t changed since way back.
*(David Brooks-The creative class was supposed to foster progressive values and economic growth. Instead we got resentment, alienation, and endless political dysfunction.)
