A professional hockey player’s brutal death during a match has ignited controversy online, with the media attributing the incident to an accident, while social media users remain skeptical.
Over the weekend, hockey player Adam Johnson, 29, suffered a fatal injury during an Elite Ice Hockey League game at Sheffield Arena in England caused by an opponent’s ice skate blade slicing open his neck.

Doesn’t look accidental to me
Gee, I wonder why?
Throats have been cut during hockey games before, the blades are extremely sharp and crap happens on the ice.
Manslaughter .. I think he meant to kick him using the check as an excuse
A little longer video

I am a diehard hockey fan.
Holder of the FreeRepublic “Hockey Pingist”.
I have watched thousands of hockey games. I have season tickets for the Hershey Bears AHL team since 2003.
That is not a hockey play. That is not an accident.
That was criminal!!!!
I don't know squat about ice skating or playing hockey, let alone maneuvering on the ice at those speeds so I'm going to refrain from speculating.
I do suspect that Matt Petgrave, the player who killed Johnson and is THE MOST penalized skater in the league, will never play hockey again.
Also interesting to note that Petgrave's name is almost never mentioned in the many articles about this story.
That’s largely because this incident gives critics a chance to demand that NHL players and everyone else be ordered to wear neck collars. You can have even more protective gear mandatory and also ban fighting, but that is not going to make the game any better or safer because it is now so much bigger and faster and stronger but so much more stupid and careless compared to the brand of hockey that even I grew up with in the 1970s and on into the 1980s (and there were complaints about how the game was evolving at that time even).
Wow, that video is tough to watch.
Looks intentional
I’m big hockey fan, played for a while. I’ve never seen anyone go for a head kick. No way a high kick would be a legal play.
Watch the gif above. It sure as hell looks like thr guy intentionally lifted his leg and targeted the guy…
From that longer clip it’s beyond obvious he targeted him. Doubt he intended to kill him, but it’s beyond clear he was intentionally trying to kick/harm him.
That player needs arrested and banned from hockey for life
Russian players were quite well known for kicking opponents in the back of the legs and Canadian and U.S. NHL and WHA players learned this back in the ‘70s.
People have slowed that video down, and that was no accident.
From the longer vid it is impossible to conclude the guy did not intentionally target him. I doubt he intended to Jill him, but there is no way he was not trying to intentionally harm him.
No one should be defending this guy…
Manslaughter at a minimum
