BREAKING: U.S. Forces Attacked in Iraq as Biden Was Preparing to Speak From the Oval Office

Joe Biden spoke on Thursday night about wanting to give billions in aid to Israel, Ukraine, and the Palestinians in Gaza. As we noted, that was a mess. And while he was calling out a lot of people, he didn't manage to call out in the speech his own Democrats like Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) when he was talking about people being hateful. 

But what the speech revealed was how much his foreign policy has gone out of control and endangered the U.S. and the world. There likely wouldn't have been a war in either place, at least not in the same way, but for bad moves and weakness. 

Even as he was preparing for those remarks, U.S. forces were being attacked in Iraq.

Baghdad, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Rockets have hit a military base hosting U.S. forces near Baghdad's international airport, Iraqi police said on Thursday.— Idrees Ali (@idreesali114) October 20, 2023

Drones and rockets targeted on Thursday evening the Ain al-Asad air base, which hosts U.S. and other international forces in western Iraq, and multiple blasts were heard inside the base, two security sources said.

The Iraqi military said it closed the area around the base and started a search operation. It was not clear yet whether the attacks caused casualties or damages, said the sources.

Rockets have hit another military base hosting U.S. forces near Baghdad's international airport, Iraqi police said on Thursday, without providing further details.

On Wednesday, there were two drone attacks, one of which caused minor injuries to some troops. 

Iraqi forces aligned with Iran have threatened the U.S. if Israel ramps up action in Gaza. 

It appears they missed Biden's "don't, don't, don't" warning about not taking advantage of the situation with the Israeli-Hamas war.

…by sending drones in two separate attacks against US air bases in western and northern Iraq. There was a CentCom press release confirming the attacks, which did result in injuries to troops on the ground, but -thankfully – none were serious.

IRAQ – In the last 24 hours, the U.S. military defended against three drones near U.S. and Coalition forces in Iraq. In western Iraq, U.S. forces engaged two drones, destroying one and damaging the second, resulting in minor injuries to Coalition forces. Separately in northern Iraq, U.S. forces engaged and destroyed a drone, resulting in no injuries or damage. We are continuing to assess the impacts to operations.

The Iranians had issued one of their stock cryptic threats just prior to the first attacks.

…On Tuesday, Iran’s embassy in Damascus cryptically tweeted out the message “Time is up” – in a statement which portends a greater regional uprising aimed at the US and Israel. Indeed this is already happening to some degree especially inside Jordan and Lebanon.

Update(1735ET): Israeli media is reporting that the United States is currently in talks to establish 'safe zones' in Gaza after it was widely reported that the IDF has been given the green light by the Netanyahu government to go into the Gaza Strip. There are also emerging reports that an Orthodox Church in Gaza has suffered attack by an Israeli strike, via Times of Israel:

The Hamas-controlled interior ministry says several displaced people who had taken shelter at a church compound in the Gaza Strip have been killed and injured in an Israeli strike.

There was no immediate comment from the IDF, which tells AFP it is looking into the potential strike.

The strike left a “large number of martyrs and injured” at the compound of a Greek Orthodox church, the ministry says.

Witnesses tell AFP the strike appears to have been aimed at a target close to the place of worship where many Gaza residents have taken refuge.
