A video of Elon Musk’s web of Starlink satellites has left onlookers stunned as scientists warn of their little-known risks to the night sky.

There are, at most, around 9,000 stars visible to Earth’s view of the sky, and around 5,000 Starlink satellites, as of August.

The hundreds of satellites in the geostationary orbit -- a single circle where they are all lined up in exactly the same orbit path -- do not collide because they are designed to "station-keep", that is, to maintain their place in line on the circle. And when they approach end-of-life, they push themselves out of that line into another orbit which keeps them from making trouble.

A few decades ago I worked in aerospace designing attitude control sensors and actuators, and that experience gave me an appreciation of just how freakin' big even low Earth orbit is, much less the higher ones.

Only at sundown in the right conditions. /s 43,000 of these things are not a massive change to our world worth some higher degree of consideration. So far he is just doing it and daring anyone to stop him. What is more, if he does not do this won’t someone else or will they do it anyway adding to the junk in our skies?
