‘Waiting for him to drop out’: DeSantis’ influence nosedives in Florida
Politico ^ | 09/22/2023 | GARY FINEOUT and KIMBERLY LEONARD

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is losing his clout in Florida.

College boards, stacked with DeSantis appointees, are rejecting job candidates with ties to the governor.

The chair of the Republican Party of Florida urged executive committee members to attend all GOP candidate events — giving cover to party faithful who want to attend a dinner at Mar-a-Lago with former President Donald Trump.

And the board that oversees many of Florida’s affordable housing programs this month placed on leave its executive director, who was helped into the job by a top DeSantis adviser.

Interviews with nearly two dozen lobbyists, political consultants and lawmakers revealed that DeSantis’ struggles as a presidential candidate have already eroded his influence in Florida. There is a widespread expectation that his candidacy will end in failure. His standing at home may depend on how long he slogs forward in the presidential campaign — and how he will manage his exit from the race if he eventually drops out.

Now, it may be just a matter of time before Florida Republicans, once unflinchingly loyal, seek distance from DeSantis and his hardball governing methods.

“You don’t get the assumption they are measuring drapes anymore — they are waiting for him to drop out,” one long-time Republican consultant in Tallahassee said of those working for the governor. The consultant, like others quoted in this story, was granted anonymity to freely discuss the sensitive situation.

State Rep. Daniel Perez, the Miami Republican in line to become the next state House speaker, urged his GOP colleagues this week to move more carefully in the future, saying that “the problem with wielding the power of government like a hammer is that the people start looking like nails.”

Perez insisted his comment was not a “message to the governor,” but added, “That being said, the Legislature can’t work alone, the Legislature works with the governor.”

And no matter how he framed his comments, Perez’s words were being viewed as a rejoinder to DeSantis. One Tallahassee lobbyist said it was a signal that the “conveyor belt” Legislature that passed whatever DeSantis wanted is coming to an end...

This is what happens to a once promising politician when he takes foolish, grandiose advice from the likes of Karl Rove and the Bush family. In less than a year, he is thoroughly wreckd and ruined.

I don’t care for the Meatball, but this Politico piece hits all the wrong notes and predictably wrong for why voters aren’t fond of him but it. Policy, particularly social, isn’t his problem for most.

Anything Politico comes up with is BS and misleading in favor of RATs.

Ah, but BS is exactly what is needed by those seeking to eliminate DeSantis as a threat to their agenda. Their agenda of lies, disinformation, propaganda and dirty politiks.

I do not like the idea of Desantis taking a nose dive at all. IMO I think he would be a good alternative to Trump. I also do not like the infighting between Desantis and Trump.

I can see the regime being successful in taking out both Trump and Desantis. Then who or what is left to fill the gap and run as a GOPe against the regime? It does not matter, for that person would most likely be a Bush III. After all, Biden is obama II.

Considering the above and voter fraud, it just does not look good for 2024.

Hey Ron, stay home and fix the FL homeowners insurance issue. Then maybe we can talk about 2028.

I still like DeSantis as FL Governor. He simply should have stayed in his lane and bided his time.

Instead, he listened to the GOPe to try to replace the people’s choice (like Schwartzeneggar in the CA recall election) and showed great disloyalty to someone he owes. Imagine where we would be if he had simply endorsed Trump and worked with him rather than flailingly trying to sabotage him.

No, those are RATs. DeSantis has engineered his own fate. He isn’t mature and personable enough to attract voters. He should have acted as Gov this time and rejected the big money donors who buy candidates to do their bidding.

He messed up, that’s about it. I didn’t buy this BS. Politico hates Trump too.

This was just designed to get responses like the one you gave even though it wasn’t written by Trump supporters.

Speaking of dropping out, does anyone know where the ardent meatball supporters have gone on FR?

That’s not what it’s saying at all. There’s a DeSantis Death Watch underway in Florida and Ron’s vanity presidential campaign has been so disastrous that it’s severely weakened his political influence in his own state. Now Ron is neither loved nor feared.

Come on Ron, time to endorse Trump and save some dignity.

“ This is what happens to a once promising politician when he takes foolish, grandiose advice from the likes of Karl Rove and the Bush family.”

This will go down as one of the most bone headed moves in modern American political history. DeSantis could have had the VP slot handed to him on a solid gold platter. He and Trump would wipe the floor with the Biden/Harris clown show.

Then the Republican nomination would have been his in a cake walk in ‘28. So I don’t know who is more stupid, the advisors who told DeSantis to run against Trump or DeSantis for actually doing it. I don’t hate the guy, I think he’s done a great job as Governor.

But this decision speaks volumes about his judgement, and it doesn’t speak kindly of it.

LOL desanctomonious is no threat to anyone. He is losing in every single state, and not by just a little. Hell, he is behind Trump by like 40 point in Florida, FLORIDA for God's sake. Florida could use a governor about now. What with the illegal immigrants being flown in directly and insurance rates doubling every other year. Maybe desanctomonious could actually do the job he has for a change. Just a thought.

Both RDS and Trump have work to finish. Ron in Florida and Trump as President. Let’s get that done and we’ll see where we’re at in 2027...
