Hank Williams was born in Butler County, Alabama, on September 17, in 1923.
100 years ago today.
He changed the way people could hear the real American voice.
An astonishing contribution to world culture.
Here are just a few of his best words:
“I was a pretty good imitator of Roy Acuff, but then I found out they already had a Roy Acuff, so I started singin’ like myself.”
“To sing like a hillbilly, you had to have lived like a hillbilly. You had to have smelt a lot of mule manure.”
“Folk songs express the dreams and prayers and hopes of the working people.”
“The way I feel is that if you don’t like folk music, stay away from my shows.”
“….. I’m in love, I’m in love with a beautiful gal That’s what’s the matter with me ….. “ (Has any poet ever written a better couplet than this?)
“There ain’t a man livin’ who hasn’t talked to his dog.”
How high does Hank rate in the pantheon of Great Americans?

This is a great post. Williams truly was The Hillbilly Shakespeare.
But…
“ “….. I’m in love, I’m in love with a beautiful gal That’s what’s the matter with me ….. “ (Has any poet ever written a better couplet than this?)”
Hank did not write this song. It was actually written before he was born.
Williams did change some words and made it a classic.

Thank you.
Then they were partly his words if he changed these lines.
What do you know about that?
Why do so many creative powerhouses have personal lives resembling train wrecks?
Regards,
the following modification made to the blog post:
“..... I’m in love, I’m in love with a beautiful gal
That’s what’s the matter with me ..... “ (These words were written by Irving Mills but immortalised by Hank.)
“If you’re thinkin’ of me like I’m thinkin’ of you
Then I know what you’re thinkin’ of” (Has any poet ever written a better couplet than this?)

Happy birthday hank.
No matter how he struggled and strived... he never got out of this world alive.
So many died of drugs and drink at age 27. I don’t know how old Hank was when he died but he was pretty young.
No, No, Joe--Luke the Drifter (Hank Williams), 1950
Move It On Over--Hank Williams (1947)
This tune was apparently inspired by Hank's hit.
Dog House Boogie--Dog House Boogie--Hawkshaw Hawkins (1948)
I can play every song he wrote and covered.
Blessing/curse type of thing.
Same with Townes Van Zandt.
Hank was something else.
We’re still a livin’ so everything’s ok!
George Thourogood covers Move it on over.
I have lap steels thanks to Hank. Though I use an overdrive and a wah wah with mine.
I like Juniors songs like this one.
