The auto industry is very efficient.
The problem is that federal regulations have made cars very complex. To pay fair wages the vehicles meeting those regulations are going to be expensive.
The automakers are also having EV tooling costs as well as taking on high EV product risks.
Exactly. A salary isn’t a gift, it’s not what you think you deserve. It is fraction of what your work earns the company.
While there is no universally defined percentage for a “good” Payroll to Revenue Ratio, a commonly cited guideline is that labor costs should ideally account for 15-30% of total revenue.
I know they are. They’ve made a science, for the last 70 years, on how to be as efficient as possible. However, for a position to pay, you have to generate wealth in excess of your age in order to make it affordable to pay you that wage. If you didn’t have to, we all could have multimillion dollar contracts no matter what we do for a living.
The only way to fix this is to figure how to make each position more productive, however that should be done.
Yes, EV’s are a waste of money. I am a fan of exploring hybrids and see how far we can go with them, but not full-on EV’s. I don’t believe, outside of us discovering some currently unknown science law or materials, of making EV’s anywhere near comparable to a gas car.
They’re doing it so Biden can ride in and save the day and get a gold star.
They made more than $18 in the 1990’s.
I know they are demanding pay raises, but that doesn’t help much when they don’t have jobs. EVs have far fewer components/parts than regular automobiles. That means fewer workers. Is the UAW demanding the curtailment of EV manufacturing? There’s only so many parking lots they can fill with unsold EVs. When the lots are full the assembly lines will be closed.
Looks like they are striking the factories that make real vehicles, the ones the companies are actually making money on. Excellent!
The big three are just a shadow of their former glory. And even they make some cars abroad. This may be the last hurrah of the UAW.
Automakers cannot give workers too much since they need to invest in EV, forced on them by Biden!
So the UAW better vote Republican, before Biden puts them out of business.

While I couldn’t tell you when the last strike happened…I know that a UAW strike is not “unprecedented.”
Slow Joe finds it almost impossible to pass a hot mike or a camera without bringing up his dead son.
The companies should just close all their factories, except the ones that make electric cars. Show the union thugs their future if they keep voting Democrat.

I have no sympathy for Union people. I remember back in the 70’s Armco Steel laid off most of their workers because steel was not selling. Then after many months, they called most of them back. What is the first thing they did? Go on strike. Really smart to finally get back to work and then bite the hand that feeds you.
Health care workers are next. September 30.
It’s insane that it’s legal for (union) employees to take deliberate actions that will inflict financial damage on their employer’s business.
Repeal the 1935 NLRA already and make labor unions liable to the Sherman Antitrust Act.
