Former Vice President Mike Pence has claimed populism is a pathway to “defeat for the Republican Party.” Former President Donald Trump, the current 2024 GOP frontrunner, is known for his populist positions, which brought him support from many disenfranchised leftists and independents.
Pence made the comments during a Wednesday appearance on “America’s Newsroom” on Fox News.
“Well, look, you look at this Republican field, whether it’s my former running mate or some of his imitators, and there is a push in this Republican primary to to move us away from our party’s historic commitment to American leadership on the world stage, to a commitment to fiscal responsibility and reform in the face of a massive national debt crisis,” Pence began.
Pence continued, “You know, I came to this party, during the Reagan years, and and I really believe not only the pathway to victory for the Republican Party in the fall of 24, but the way we restore security and prosperity for the American people is to deliver a standard bearer and an agenda that’s built on that commonsense conservative agenda that has always delivered greater security and prosperity for the American people.”
“I think it’s a real choice in the party between whether we stay on the path of the traditional conservative agenda that’s defined this movement for the last 50 years and really is grounded in American ideals or whether we are going to follow the siren song of populism unmoored to conservative principles,” the longshot candidate added.
Pence concluded, “I really believe that’s a pathway not only to defeat for the Republican Party but ultimately it is the pathway to disappointment and decline for our party and for our country.”

Gobly-gook.
Elite sellouts like Pence are the reason the populist movement has grown…
populism
pŏp′yə-lĭz″əm
noun
A political philosophy supporting the rights and power of the people in their struggle against the privileged elite.
The movement organized around this philosophy.
The philosophy of the Populist Party.
Micro Pence is engorged with delusion.
He got to be VP because Trump chose him as a running mate.
I know we hate Mike Pence now, but he was not always hated here on Free Republic.
“How did he ever get to be VPOTUS”
Were there any good choices for Trump? If Trump dies, are there any good alternative choices.
Well, a pathway for YOUR defeat anyway.
Phones Baloney when he hitched his ride to Trump.
Once people would say, “My name is Mudd.” After Pence abdicated his responsibility to defend the Republic after the 2020 Big Steal, not we will say, “My name is Pence” if we do something shameful.
Reagan was more of a populist than Pence could ever be.
Pence thinks that winning means being democrat, just a little bit less so. This is why we have such a large group of fake republicans elected from very red states.
GOOD!
Screw the Republican Party.
Is there some disconnect with conservatism and populism? Is it realty some either/ or choice?
I wonder how many people understand the siren song metaphor?
burocracy - bureaucracy.
You're just supposed to vote for them and then shut up. Let them do whatever their large donors or democrat/deep state masters tell them to do.
Sorry, Pence, we don’t care anymore. We’re sick to death of giving Republicans victories only for Republicans to scorn us, ignore us, slander us, and stab us in the back.
Either the candidate that the People want wins, or the Republicans can keep losing forever, I don’t care.
Thanks, Mr. Electoral Giant. Go suck some toes with Dick Morris.
If the GOPe had been fighting for even half of the Conservative principles contained in its own party platform over the past 35 years there would be no need to turn to populism.
No wonder he’s polling at 1%.
So? Parties come and go, and their existence isn’t guaranteed by the Constitution.
That’s coming from a guy who has worked employed in government all but two years of his adult life. Pence doesn’t know jack chit about what it means to be a hardworking American, making it on his own independent of government and how to raise a family today. He’s out of touch in every way.
I’m sick and tired of these lifer politicians that never achieve anything more than making it more difficult for normal Americans to succeed. Government is not the answer to our nation’s problems. When someone spends their entire life in government, they are the problem.
