The fallen nature of man does not permit people or nations to engage in wishful thinking about their security. "Just leave us alone" does not work as a basis for personal security or in foreign policy.
For people and countries alike, if you have things that other people and countries want, you have to defend them or suffer losses. And that means thinking realistically about how to deal with bad people. The Kagans may not be correct, but they at least are engaging with the issue.
